John and Gertrude Bahr and family first came to Old Remo September 7, 1955 and are still supplying their wonderful homegrown produce locally. Half a century ago, the Bahrs, Rauschenbergers and Klukas families arrived at... Old Remo. And as they ap- proached Robin Rd.-at Old Remo, Mr. Bahr said to his family, “the next time I leave here you will have to carry me out.” Both John and Ger- trude Bahr lived there until their death. ‘In the 1940s and ‘50s, many people were encour- aged by advertisements of *. the area as being a good ag- ricultural area with available land. These advertisements caught the attention of many _ prospective settlers. John George Bahr and_ his wife Gertrude were one of five families who settled ‘at Old Remo. The other four families were the-Rauschen- © berger, Klukas, Rausers and the Westerhof. The three families who arrived first in 1955 were the Bahrs, - Rauschenberger and Oswald . They drove from Calgary taking three days over the Grand Prairie way, long way around, then over a skid road right to Old Remo. | The families all worked to- gether and helped each other and were very glad that they had a roof over their heads. , They kept busy working and " developing their new land and building homes.’ The lumber used to build their homes came from the Sande Lumber Mill in Ter- race and the following year _ they set up the chicken house, raising over 1,500 chickens and sold eggs lo- cally to the Terrace Co-op. After the land had been cleared, the Bahrs started ‘selling fresh produce, travel- ling to Kitimat every Friday. They supplied Kitimat with: fresh vegetables until the 1970s, selling locally since then. Many people still come from Kitimat, Prince Rupert and surrounding area to buy their produce. The Bahrs are very well known gardeners and have now been in busi- ness for 48 years. Both Mr... The Bahr family is likely the oldest and pro- duce the most local grown produce in the area. While John was away at war, Mrs. Bahr and the children had to flee many times hiding in fear of their family and moved to Neus- tadt, in Germany. In 1952, the family immigrated to Canada. They first lived worked for two years at Shaughnessy growing and harvesting sugar beets.
