She spent her summer holi- days visiting two friends she met at school — and she had to travel to Central America to do it. Janet journeyed first to Costa Rica and then went on to Guatemala for two and a half weeks, Born in Kitimat, the 21-year- old Terrace woman graduated from Caledonia Senior Sccondary School in the class of *89. ; She left that year to study first-year sciences at the Uni- versity of. Victoria. Janet changed her direction there and went into languages — specifically -. French = and Spanish. But it was here in Terrace at Skecna Jr.’ Secondary that Janct met her friend Karla Vega, who came here from Costa Rica, The two became good friends and kept in touch. This year Janet got an invitalion from Karla to come and visit herin Costa Rica. Janet left May ist and visited Karla for two and a_ half months before going on to Guatemala to visit another friend she met in university — Michelle Eddington. Michelie’s father: works al the Canadian embassy there, and Janet stayed at the family home. Thanks to some political tur- bulence, Janet’s vacation was definitely exciting. There were two bombings while she was there, and said it was a scary situation. Janet said she was surprised by the poverty there. —— and the sight of men carrying guns — but she gained much in- sight into the region’s cultures.
