N “Before I went to Saigon, I had learned and read that napalm melts the Flesh, and I thought that’s nonsense, because I can put a roast in the oven and the fat will melt but the meat stays there. Well, I went and saw these children burned by napalm, and it is absolutely true. The chemical reaction of this napalm does ‘melt the flesh, and the flesh runs down their faces onto their chests and it sits there and it grows there . . . These children can’t turn their heads, they were so thick with flesh . . . and when gangrene sets in, they cut off their hands or fingers or their feet; the only things they cannot cut off is their head.” — Martha Gelhorn, writing in last January’s issue of the Ladies Home Journal LABOR SCENE: This is important! September 8, 1967—PACIFIC TRIBUNE— Page 12 Unions call for strongef anti-pollution program This week’s session of the Vancouver and District Labor Council unanimously approved its executive’s recommendation that the provincial government must extend its Fraser River pollu- tion control by also prohibiting industrial waste being dumped in the river, While commending the govern- ment for its action in requiring all municipalities affected to in- stall sewage treatment facilities, and that no municipal raw sewage be dumped, the VLC urged that industrial waste also come within the government order. The VLC further proposed, since the costs of installing sew- age treatment plants would con- stitute a too heavy financial bur- den on the already overloaded municipalities, that the cost ar- rangements for such plants be shared by the three levels of gov- ernment, with the federal govern-~ ment assuming the largest share, Secretary Paddy Neale re- ported that both the VLC and the BCFL had been bypassed by the sponsors of the recent Fraser River pollution conference in Surrey, and consequently had no opportunity to present intended briefs before that body. The VLC also adopted an ex- ecutive recommendation urging the Prince Rupert Fishermen’s Co-operative to rehire 40 of its employees’ involved in the recent United Fishermen and Allied Workers strike, as all other fish packing plants did at the terminaion of the dispute. In current UFAWU-Co-op ne- gotiations for a new wage con- tract, the latter are demanding strike penalty clauses while con- tinuing its anti-strike victimiza- tion of those of its employees involved in the strike. The VLC motion was brief and to the point; “rehire those 40 workers first — then anew collective agreement,” “I always thought,” stated a VLC delegate, “that the co-ops were part of a workers’ move- ment, always friendly to labor, Bernhardt in the Wall Street Journal “Only $1.95.
