ters "THE history of mankind has never seen anything remotely approaching the scale of Russia’s Stalin Plan—the Constructions for Communism. It is already fully under way. Parts of it will be completed next year. Parts will take up to 15 years. Look at the artist's impression of the plan.. There are four main constructions: Power stations __The Volga, one of the world’s great- est walterways, will be transformed. New power stations at Stalingrad and Kuibyshev will generate more power than all the stations of Switzerland and Sweden combined. They will be ithe largest hydro- electric stations in the world. ‘Kuibyshev will be far larger than - America’s famous Grand Coulee and Boul- der hydroelectric stations. _ It will send power to Moscow, Sara- nov, Astrakhan and hundreds of towns in central Russia. Forest belts—you can see them in the map—will be planted along both banks of the river to protect ithe fertile land against searing winds from the deserts of Central Asia. An immense network of irrigation ‘canals willbe built. The millions of Itrees will transform the climate of the Caspian area. cture Oo rook An area exceeding the’ combined size of Holland, Belgium and Denmark will be brought under cultivation for the first time. Five seas canal 9—This year will see the completion of the 80-mile-long Volga-Don canal. When it is open for navigation five seas White, Baltic, Azov, Caspian and Black—will be connected by navigable water routes. Tsimlyanskaya hydroelectric stations is nearly ready. The system of forest belts is well under way. ‘ Flectrified farming _—The system of dams and hydroelectric stations on the River Dnieper will bring millions of barren acres in the Crimea and Ukraine into cultivation: Here, as in the areas of the other projects, agriculture will be electrified. Vast new industries of every kind will spring up to use the cheap electric power. Fertile for first time __Four ‘thousand experts are completing the surveying work for the Grand Turkmen Canal and its power stations and irrigation canals. The canal, stretching some 800 miles through the ard Kara Kum desert (in ee eee ee eee f Communism the lower right corner of the map), will be the longest in the world. An area equivalent to Switzerland and Denmark will be made fertile -for the first time. Almost total mechanisation of the job will bring the canal to completion at record speed by 1957. There will be three giant power stations. / Food for 100 million There you have it in the barest out- line. But this outline tells nothing of the flowering of civilisation in former desert regions, of the new towns, of tthe vast increase in population that will be rendered, possible. meee When these secanets are complete the Soviet Union will be growing enough additional food for 100 million people. . Every branch of science is involved. Geologists are studying soil problems con- nected with the canal cutting and irriga- tion plans. Weather experts are trying to fore cast what precisely will happen to the weather when tree shelter-belts are com- pleted. More wheat than Canada The USSR Plant Cultivation Insti- tute is testing 600 varieties of spring wheat for use in the 70 million acres of newly cultivatable land. Cotton, almonds, apricots, walnuts, and vines are being selected for Turkmenia. Three thousand varieties of fruit and berries are being examined to find the best varieties for planting in ‘the Crimea. The total wheat crop in the newly irrigated areas alone will be far greater than that of Canada—one of the world’s leading wheat producers. : The annual output of the new power stations will be 22,000 million kilowatt- hours. That is equal to the output of all power stations of Denmark, Finland, Holland, Belgium and Spain combined. They want peace These staggering undertakings are de- signed to play a key part in fulfilling the famous short definition of Communism: “From each according to his capacity— to each according to his needs.” For they will help to produce such abundance in the Soviet Union 'that Soviet society will begin to have enough of every~ thing for everybody. . The only thing that can stop it now is war. Can anyone wonder that the people of the Soviet Union are passionately attached to peace? After all, look at the map. Look _ what peace will offer them!
