Janna Taylor, Parks & Recreation Director You have all had an Opportunity to read the report from IPM/Associates on "weed management control" for the City of Port Coquitlam. The Environmental Protection Committee has gone over the report and have made several recommendations. I will go through each recommendation of the report and indicate the actions which will be taken by the Depart- ment as recommended by the Committee. The first point to be made by the Committee is that on page three of the report, Sheila Darr states: "that by and large, the city park maintenance staff are using good turf management practices". The first section to be dealt with is: Athletic Fields Recommendations: 1. Establish a regular monitoring program for each athletic field and keep a written record of observations. : Comment: Bram Hoogendoorn, Parks Superintendent, will:be setting up a regular monitoring: program immediately and the fields will be monitored once a month. In the monitoring ‘ program the parks crew will identify new species of weeds “ aS soon as they are noted. . _Establish weed tolerance levels. Comment: Bram will investigate the establishment of. tolerance _levels for each athletic field maintained by the city. In addition to establishing levels for-the athletic fields he will-also look at tolerance levels for other _ grass areas under the jurisdiction of the parks crew. "Reduce stress on turf contributing to weed growth. Under this section the report recommends several steps to under- take in order to achieve the re@uction of stress. _ A. It is recommended that the basic seed mix used for athletic fields be changed to a mix of tall fescue and perennial rye. The recommended mix is: 80% Alta fescue (Fawn, Rebel or Mustang tall fescue) @ 8 1b/1000 square feet.
