JANE MATTHEWS TECHNO TIPS Are you weary of tedious scratching and slipping to prepare pieces for jaining? In same situations a deflocculated slip will serve @s well and will elirmi- nate the need for laborious scratching. There isnt a precise recipe for this, since the amount to deflac- culant that needs te be added te your slip and the thickness of the slip required will vary, they are de- pendent on moisture content in the clay piecas be- ing joined and how readily your clay absorbs mois- ture. A glug of darvan in a S500mi. container is a good starting point, This technique seerns to work best whan the clay is slightty on the dry side of leather harc. When the deflocculated slip is brushed or trailed along the edges to be joined, water is absorbed by the clay, and a soft zone forms. When it appears ready (do a few trials) the pieces can simply be pressad to- gether, and after being allawed to set for a short time the joint will be secure. With very non plastic clay bodies, such as some casting clays, the edges te be joined will be ready very soon after the slip is brushed on; more plastic bodies take longer. Fora while after starting to use deflacculant slip | contin- wed to reinforce the hidden side of the jaint, but now rarely bother, it doesn't seem to be needed PAT TADDY -A SPECIAL PRESENTATION- THE WORKS OF YUKIO YAMAMOTO -THE YAKIMONO OF TOZAN- MASTER POTTER OF TOZAN KILNS AT GALLERY OF B.C.
