Weather arouses flooding worry

PROVINCIAL OFFICIALS spent the weekend
keeping an eye on northwest flood levels as
warmer weather returned.

The trend had officials predicting water le-
vels would once again rise.

As of June 7, the Skeena River at Usk was
at 8.31 metres — down from 9.04 metres a week
ago.

, Officials said the drop is in response to cool
relatively dry weather over.the past week,

Although little rain was expected, the war-
mer weather affecting the mountain snowpack
could once again result in more runoff.

“The capacity of rivers to absorb any signif-
icant increase in flows is still marginal,” said
provincial information officer Shelley Browne.

The Coast Mountain snowpack is at or near
a 50-year record high level.

Officials say it is also becoming more
dense, with a higher water content, as a result

The denser snowpack means it takes less
heat to cause sharply increased runoff.

That further adds to the flood risk during the
remainder of the spring runoff season which,
provincial officials said, could continue for
several wecks.

Going into the weekend, actual flooding has
been minimal this year. Areas of the Bulkley
Valley did experience some flocding.
