Markets t LAST WEEK I introduced you to Jeff. Town of -“Plentiful Preserves’' and his parents, Ron and Linda, I told you about their pro- duct, but not about the ‘Towns themselves. Ron and Linda met and married in. Owen Sound Ontario, That’s where Jeff was bom. Shortly after that Linda ‘was offered a teaching posi- ‘tion in Terrace. Job pros- pects were better for Ron in ‘Terrace than in Owen sound ‘(as it. was more or less a tetirement city), : So 14 years ago the ‘Towns moved to Terrace ,when Jeff was only 9 -months old, Ron worked as -@ power engineer with ‘Ocelot from 1981 until this "past spring. : Linda taught grade 4 at - Clarence Michiel ‘elementary school for 12 ‘years. She now works with Distance Education. “The Towns have always ‘had an interest in farmers “markets, That's not surpris- ing, coming from Ontario ,where there are the older ‘more established farmers ‘ markets. The average farmers _ Markets in Ontario are not “much | bigger than the Valley Farmers Nriving e LYNNE CHRISTIANSEN Market, just older, estimates Linda, In fact, some are a lot older, Many of the markets date back to the early days of the Jast century. One of the oldest is the Kingston public market, es- tablished in 1780. The Bel- leville Farmers Market dates back to 1816, The Famous Kitchener Fanmers Market dates back to 1816. The Famous Kitchener Farmer's Market was established in 1869, Markets have always been very successful in Ontario. In recent years they are making huge comeback, In 1988 there were 60 farmers markets in Ontario — six years later there were 125 and the growth con- sewhere tinues. The program in Ontario is seen as one of the best in North America. The Town visited the St. Albert Market just outside of Edmonton. It is one of the biggest markets in Al- berta. They picked up on some interesting new ideas. One thing they found a bit comical was the fact that no early birds were allowed to buy until the bell rang at 9 am. So shoppers were poised to strike as soon as the bell rang. The Towns also visited the Bellingham market and were very impressed. The also went to the state fair in Idaho, which is not a Farm- ers Market but is packed with ideas for market vendor to bring home. When you are planning your holiday for next sum- mer and want to visit some farmers markets, don’ hesitate to call me for in- formation on market loca- tions. I have a B.C., market directory and may be able to help you with some out of province information. It would be nice to hear your impressions of other markets as well, The Skeena Valley Farm- ers Market runs until the end of October.
