Engineering director Stew Christensen said any change in fluoridation requires the approval of voters in a referendum — a question that could be posed, if coun- cil was serious about it, in the next election. Hallock quickly atiacked the issue, predicting a messy and unproductive public outcry if council tries to end fluoridation. We'll have nothing but a dog’s dinner,’ she said. City hall would be beset by all the dentists and young mothers of the world, she added. “['d like to see where we're going to spend it in- stead,”’ Hallock said. There’s no indication council plans to pursue the issue. Bench parents make new school pitch PRESSURE'S GROWING to build a new - elementary school on the bench as a result of an Uplands Elementary parents ad- visory meeting last onth. The school is practically bursting at the seams, says principal Dawn Martin and one new family has already been turne away. ‘According to the|class size contract, we can fudge the limitiby 10 per cent,” said Martin, That meang for every child over the limit, the school, must add one hour of teacher assistant time for that class per day. But once the 1 per cent maximum is reached, the class is considered full. The education ministry .isn’t expected to atiswer the request for a new school until next May. Even if the answer is yes, Uplands will still face enrollment prob- lems while the new one i is being built. Uplands parents, at a recent meeting, put forth a variety of options for the school board to consider. . The population problem is so bad now that even during construction of a new school, parents waht Uplands closed to ANS CARPET B. VINYL DO. Sending students now being bussed to ‘Uplands to other schools, shifting the school’s entire Grade 7 population to other schools or sending all kindergarten stu- dents elsewhere were other options. But they met with criticism from parents, “People bought within a few blocks of the school, and now we're suggesting bussing their children to a new school? it doesn’t make sense,’”: said Tracy Tinkess, : chair of the Uplands parent council. Some parents at the mecting objected to bussing their children to other schools without enrollment problems because they felt those schools were of a lower quality than Uplands, However Tinkess stressed those opinions were of individual parents, and should not be considered as representative of the parents advisory council.
