DEAR ABBY: Waa I ever glad to see that letter in your

column about the girl who would never say yea or no — she .|°-

I had a very good friend who did the same thing. No

matter what I asked her, she'd say, “I don’t care.” It used to

just drive me up a wall. an a
Once I asked her if she wanted a cup of coffee, and she
gave me the same old, wishy-washy “I don't care,” so] said,
“Well, I don’t care either. Do you want a cup of coffee, or

* don’t you?” - :

. It was as though a light had turned on in her head. She
- gaid, very positively, “Yes, I would like a cup.” J gave her a

Then she said she realized how stupid “ahe’muat have |
sounded all those years saying “I don’tcate.” Sheadmitted [|

that she was juat shy and afraid she'd come across as too

it's important to be positive and assertive. I have another
friend who, when I ask how he is, always says,.“All right —-
