PAGE 2, THE HERALD, Friday June 24, 1977 The By GLADYS BLYTH It’s ‘Year 101' for salmon canning at Port Edward, the small fishing village on British Columbia’s northwest coast. And with a century of fiish processing and packing ehind them, this community of less than 2,000 remains confidnet that the sea will continue to be their great provider. While British Columbia's multi-million dollar fishing industry began on the Fraswer River in 1870, the first northern plant was established six years later on the Skeena River's north arm at a site then known variously as Woodcock’s Landing, _Skeenamouth, Willa Clough and Inverness. Today, two plants operate along the six-mile Inverness Passage and pPorpoise Harbour: the Cassiar Packing and the British Columbia Parkers. The latter provides informative tours through its fish processing plants to busloads of visitors off tour ships and ferries docking at nearby Prince Rupert and to tourists driving across the province on Yellowhead 16 and point east. An enterprising missionary, Archdeacon W. H. Collison, suggested tthe site for the first cannery at Port Edward to a visiting emissary of the fi fishing industry at Columbia River, Colonel Lane, Collison, who had stepped ashore fro a cance at the landing, was introduced to Lane by William H. Woodcock, inn and store owner at Woodcock Landing. Lane arrived by the Hudson steamer “Otter,” Lane, s salmon packer, informed the missionary of his intentions of establishing a fish cannery in the area if salmon stocks proved good. There upon Collison led the visitor to the water’s edge and p p. pointed out the nee of salmon in the ness Passage. Lane was sold. He immediately started negotiating with Woodcock for the purchase of the property and the Inverness Cannery was built. - Although records state the first 3,000 cases of red salmon was processedin 1877, t the plant did operate briefly the previous year. The Inverness Cannery operated continuously for 74 years before it closed down in 1950. In 1989, the North Pacific Cannery was built adjacent to the Inverness Cannery. It was taken over three years jater by H. O. Bell-Irving and became known as the Anglo-British Columbia Packing’s North Pacific Plant, Except for two seasons this plant operated continuously for 77 years. In early 1969 it was purchased by Canadian Fishing and after a year or two of canning, the machinery was removed. It is now used as a reduction plant for fish meal and oil and for repairs and storage of beats and nets. ca The Cassiar Packing Company was built in 1903 at the mouth of the Skeena River. Ewen Macmillan, the grandson of Alexander Ewen, one of the founders of British Columbia’s first salmon cannery at _Annieville on the Fraser sea overnment . River, has been oone of Cassiar’s owners for many years. This plant has also recorded 74 years of continuous ope operation and many more years lie ahead. The fourth cannery at Port Edward, Sunny side, was constructed in 1916 between the North Pacific Plant and: the Cassiar Cannery. Sunny side eventually came under British Columbia Packers’ ownership when transferred from the Gosse Packing Company in 1928. It closed down recently. Near the time of Sunnyside’s demise, British Columbia Packers acquired Nelson Brothers Fisheries, one of the major processing plants in the north, located on Porpoise Harbour, which connects w with Inverness Passage. Documentation by Cicely Lyons, author of Salmon, Our Heritage, indicates this cannery was established Jn 1928,.,The plan PrOnesa pau species of salmon as fresh, frozen or canned. British Columbia Packers also handles flatfish, shell fish, halibut, herring and fish meal and oil products. The five fish plants, once strung like be beads along the six mile Inverness Passage and Porpoise Harbour, were separage entities until Port Edward was incorporated as a village municipality with Canning at Port ... experienced “= tansitions “and growth of *s@ne of British Columbia's the letters patent placing them all within the village’s boundaries. Port Edward was laid out as a townsite in 1907 by a group of speculators, who hoped that it would be the terminus of the proposed Grand Truck Railway, now Canadian National Railway. When Prince Rupert, on adjacent Kaien Island, was selected as the termunus, early plans for the development of Port Edward fell through. So it remained a fishing community until 1966 when residents moved toward incorporation, which was finaily approved on June 28, 1966. While many of Port Edward’s residents are employed by industries in Prince Rupert, the village remains today: a ‘predominantly fishing community, In its 10: years it has _ all the leading industries, from a small, isolated, hadn- operated outpost employing fishermen in open dories to the present highly- mechanized plants employing skilled processors and vast fleets of modern, far-rranging vessels.
