Sumatra Attempts by Conservative leaders to minimize the extent of the economic crisis were exposed this week by disclosure that on February 13 there were 854,000 Canadians registered for work with National Employment Service, the highest number since 1940. But Ottawa doesn’t like to use NES figures in estimating the number of unemployed, on the grounds that some of those registered have jobs but are seeking better ones. Ottawa claims that in mid-February there were “only” 555,000 unemployed, plus 36,000 persons with jobs who were on “temporary layoff.” NES figures for Pacific re- gion at February 13, with fig- ures for February, 14, 1957 in brackets: 99,502 (71,872); New Westminster, 11,857 (9,313); Prince George, 3,141 (2,044); Vancouver, 43,574 (29,810); Victoria, 6,078 (4,511). Two top Conservative lead- ers — Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and Public Works Minister Howard Green — were greeted by picket lines when they visited Vancouver last week. At the Forum for which the Conservative machine had or- ganized a capacity crowd, Die- fenbaker was met by groups of youth. and unemployed carry- ing placards with such slogans as, “Dief Means Griets: “51 Followed John and My Job is Gone,” “100 Years of Pro- gress, 100,000 Unemployed.” Green ducked a demonstra- tion of 300 unemployed or- ganized by the unemployment committee of Marine Workers Union when he opened the new post office last Friday. Placards carried by the mar- chers read, “Where’s our mer- chant marine, Green?” “Open trade with People’s China,” “Unemployment is Here, we need Jobs Now,” and: “Remem- per the Post Office, 1938.” ae 1 The VANCOLVER SUN: Tues., Nar) 18 14" . i a “malicious” Communist charge that Canada he : surrendered control of its air force ts fo | the United Stat Yeaflet distributed by the cam © : palgn committee of Vancouver: Centre Labor - Pr eressive: laotie. oe oe Rush.
