January 24th, 1977 of vehicles within the City was defeated. Alderman Thompson inquired whether the applicant would be reducing staff when the Proposed conversion is operative, and Mr. Thompson advised he would not be, as the employee now serving as a gas pump attendant will be transferred to the car repair bays. Alderman Laking stated he could not foresee an increase in the volume of business to warrant the proposed $125,000.00 expenditure required for the conversion, and he pointed out that at least one full- service station in the City is presently selling gas at a lesser price than some self-service stations. Mr. D.J. Sharp, Marketing Department Planner for Gulf O11, then spoke in support of the application, and Stated that a report prepared by the City of Vancouver shows a significant increase in volume for self~service gas stations due to generally lower prices, motorists being able to serve themselves faster, etc. Alderman Ranger stated his concern that the monies to pay for the conversion would come from local customers, and he proposed the following motion: Moved by Alderman Ranger: Seconded by Alderman Mabbett: Whereas the proposed business is in the nature of a public utility and results in an unnecessary duplication of services: And Whereas the proposed business will cause an increased fire hazard to surrounding lands and premises; And Whereas the proposed business will eliminate jobs which might otherwise be available to residents of the City; Therefore be it Resolved that the business licence application to convert the Gulf Service Station at 1976 Prairie Avenue to a "self service station with bays" be denied. TABLED. Prior to the question being called on the above-stated resolution, a discussion ensued, and it was generally agreed that in view of the fact that a two-thirds majority of all the members of Council would be required for passage thereof, it was generally agreed that the same be deferred until Mayor Campbell is present at the next meeting. Moved by Alderman Traboulay: Seconded by Alderman Laking: That the foregoing proposed resolution to deny a business licence application to convert the Gulf Service Station at 1976 Prairie Avenue to a "self service station with bays" be deferred for one week, Carried. Aldermen Thompson and Keryluk voted against the resolution.
