C. Attenticn: R.A. Freeman City Clerk Dear Sirs Res: Application of Maple Ridge Bus Services itd. to Discontinue Bus Services now Provided Between Haney and Essondale Car: ? Hospital Eaployees. . fhis is to acknowledge receipt of your letter written with regard to, the above application. Your coments hava been noted and the consern of the Municipal Council is understood. ‘The applicant, Maple Ridge Bus Service Ltd., has based its appli-~ cation on repregentasions that it is now, and has been in the past, losing substantial monies on the operation of the Essondale workers’ bus runs. Finencial statenents and details of revenue received, passengers carried, and miles operated, have been submitted in connection with the application. For many years, the bus company received a subsidy to suppoit the Essondale service but that subsidy was discontinued in 1970 and, despite a substantial increase in bus fares at that tine, the carrier contends that the service is operating at a loss. Ths carrier advises that he haa attempted to obtain another subsidy without success. The Public Utilities Comission is a purely regulatory body and has © no funds at its disposal to subsidize any transport service. It is possible, therefore, that if after a full investigation of the application has been cormleted and the representations of the applicant seem to be substantiated, the Commission could be in the position of having little alternative but to approve the application.
