CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD he Mail Bag Racism hurts Dear Sir: ; Racism is not funny. Racism hurts.” Racist jokes encourage racism and teach racism to children. . . I am disappointed that editor Rod Link would place — “ a racist editorial cartoon in his paper on Sept. 14. The demeaning picture of an “Indian and his son” abus- ing fishing rights, is racism I, like many other driv- _ers here in the northwest are being taken by the gas sta- - tions with the recent price increases that are being put onto us all. A question I have © is — the gas stations received _ a delivery of gas and at the time of delivery the cost per litre was $1.09... However no further de- . liveries have taken place. As I write, the cost per litre has escalated to. $1.19 and rumour has it before the end of the coming week, fuel . will rise to $1.30 per litre. _ My serious question is, the gas stations pay for the gas at the time of delivery at $1.09 per litre or less. How can they justify the increases to the present cost per litre when no other de- liveries have taken place. _ I am not about to believe ‘that the gas stations volun- ' tarily give the oil companies the extra revenue made. Consider yourself in. a grocery store. You buy your groceries at the price on the shelves. By the time you get to the check out you are informed the prices have increased. Do you pay the increased price, when know- ingly the store had their deliveries at the cheaper prices. Guess what, there is a lot of groceries left at the check out. We, as drivers, are bé- ' ing. taken for a ride by the gas companies, and perhaps our local gas stations. We, as drivers, but also the public at large eventually have to pay for the increase in the gas” put upon us. , This same question was asked. of an oil company person on T.V., the outcome of his answer, simple...the question was not answered. If this letter seems offen- sive to the gas companies, no apologies will be forth- coming. Charles F. Meek, Terrace, 'B. Cc. ‘Good jobs could be lost" Dear Sir: oo, It is with much conster- nation that I understand re- tired managers have come . back to work in Terrace. for what I could maybe class as ‘fools gold’. People like Don Kerr who used to live in Terrace _and is retired in Vancouver, Gerry Bakker who currently resides in Terrace and is re- tired. These people retired with a substantially better pension than the. regular employees but now deem it fit to come back to work for © outrageous amounts of mon- ey which could ultimately be the demise of the TWU. Meanwhile, current em- ployees raising families, us- ing facilities here such as the library, the pool, the arena and major shopping outlets..’ The chance of there be- ing few Telus employees here are very great if Telus is successful in breaking the union. A lot of good pay- ing jobs will be lost and so will the sales of a lot of lo- cal business. To the retired managers like Don Parr, Ron Anderson and some others—my utmost respect. To the others, is this re- ally what you want for our community? Mel Anderson Terrace, B.C. that ‘mocks the culture and the people of Kitsumkalum _and Kitselas. Who are the “Indians” in the cartoon? Do they include Arlene Roberts who was featured . elsewhere in an article about the disappearance of aborigi- nal women on Highway, 16? What about those missing aboriginal women? Do they include Deanna Nyce who is featured in an Racism is not funny | article about the internation- al success of the Nisga’a’s university college that she i is leading? Do they include the school children who will have to endure taunts from a classmate at school? Thoughtless racist jokes . include all these people in the hurt and poisonous envi- — ronments that result. J. McDonald, Terrace, B.C.
