A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 24, 2002 MLA says dialysis can be cheaper SKEENA LIBERAL MLA Roger Harris remains con- . vinced a planned renal dialysis service here can be deli- vered cheaper than forecast, And if it means the difference between success and failure, the current project cost should be tarn apart and put back together, he said. The way things stand now, the cost if putting in a-six- station dialysis clinic has been pegged at $1.458 million: It is scheduled to go in an undeveloped portion of the second floor of Mills Memorial Hospital. Of that amount, $872,799 is for renovation of the space, $80,250 is for a contingency account, $190,642 is for consulling and testing, $65,270 is for program man- agement and $84,733 is for GST, leaving $8.560 for inci- dentals. The six stations themselves would cost $347,750. Harris has been focussing on the construction costs in his conversations with health officials. From front “I've been challenging them to look at options,” said Harris. If reducing the cost means putting the service into an- other building, it's something that should be explored, Harris added. “What we're looking for is what is best for the patient,” said. Harris. “We also have to look for the best value for. the patient.” “If it makes sense to look at all of the options, that’s what we Have to.do.” "We can't be satisfied with saying that's the way we've done things before,” said Harris. Northern Health Authority officials, who would pro- vide-the renal service. here, say. the. $1,458 «million figure. . is consistent with the costs of installing and providing a dialysis service, Dialysis next for health care projects around the pro- vince, Cazac noted. ' All five of those project remain on the priority list and the task is now to match up dollars to deve- lop the service with dollars to operate the service. Up until last year, that task would have been done by several different agen- cies. But now it is just one - the new Provincial Health Services Agency (PHSA), which has gathered up under its authority all of the specialty medical ser- vice groups out there. : “The Ministry [of Health] is wailing for the ‘-PHSA to confirm there are ‘dollars for the project and for the others,” said Cozac. . “While we are very ‘passionate about the Ter- race prospect, the PHSA has to be passionate about all of the other requests.” - The other projects are either expansions or new dialysis services for Surrey Memorial, Kelowna Gen- eral Hospital, Penticton Regional Hospital and the ‘Creston Community Cli- nic, Each one, including Terrace, have equal rank- ing when it comes to their need, said Cozac. { One of the reasons the Terrace project makes sense is-because the main service in Prince George is ‘exceeding cap has already ‘exceed capacity, It has nine stations and ‘now serves 54 people. The satellite service for ‘Terrace is set for six sta- ‘tions with a maximum ca- pacity of 36 people. Workers at the dialysis ‘service in Prince George ‘have been canvassing pa- ‘tients there, trying to de- ‘termine how many people ‘now there would want to ‘move back to the north- “west. Cozac said initial pro- ‘jections for Terrace won't -be anywhere near the 36- patient mark. But with an aging popu- lation and a growing num- ‘ber of people suffering from diabetes, a sign that ‘the kidneys are affected, Busy night for police LOCAL police had their ‘hands full Friday, Apr. 12 ‘responding to 32 calls in ‘Terrace ~ mostly involving ‘alcohol and minors. . Police said they were ‘short staffed with only ‘three officers on duty when ‘they started responding to .the deluge of calls. “There were lots of ‘teenagers that were -drunk,” said Cpl. Scott ‘Lovell who was the watch ‘commander that night. “It ‘was just unreal.” : ‘ At least two people ‘were taken to Mills Mem- ‘orial hospital with injuries ‘Tesulting from alcohol-re- ‘lated incidents. ‘Lovell said most of the ‘calls responded to that ‘night were miner infra- ‘tions. ' “We went to a fight at ‘the swimming pool where ‘a 13 year old got a bloady ‘nose -— I don’t know if it ‘was broken or not,” Lovell said. - “We seized a vehicle ‘and suspended an 18-year- ‘old for drunk driving.” Lovell said it was one ‘of the busiest nights. he’s ‘seen since he came to the- detachment last year. she says the patient base will grow, And even though a Ter- race service will take some of the pressure off of it is also expanding. The addition of 11 more dialysis units, for a total of 20 all told, is taking place as part a new hospital pro- ject in Prince George. “It’s appraved for 2003 and should serve us fine for the next five years,” said Cozac, , you want a copy of?
