TERRACE RESIDENT
Lorne Sexton was named
Canadian Alliance Mem-
ber of the Year at the
party’s national convention
two weeks ago in Edmon-
ton.

Sexton is the president
of the party’s Skeena con-
stituency association and
was one of the early mem-
bers of the Reform party ,
the predecessor to the Al-
liance, when it became
active here in the late
1980s.

“I thought we had a
problem with our govern-
ment and that it needed to
be replaced,” said Sexton.

He became president of
the local Reform consti-
tuency association in 1991
and held that role until
1994, Sexton returned as
president in 1998, guiding
the transition here from the
Reform party to the Cana-
dian Alliance.

“Tt wasn’t just me get-
ting the award. It should
have been the whole
board,” said Sexton last
week,

The award is given out
every two years when the
party has its national con-
vention.

It is meant for a person
who has made a signif-
icant contribution to the
party at the constituency
level.

Skeena Reform MP
Andy Burton, one of those
who nominated Sexton,
said he has helped keep
the party strong in the
northwest. .

“Lorne’s been very sup-
portive. He’s been a tre-
mendous help and I know
the [constituency associa-
tion] board feels the same
way,” said Burton.

Sexton will receive a
plaque in recognition of
his accomplishment.

Tuition up
at UNBC

TUITION AT the Univers-
ity of Northern British Co-
tumbia is going up by 22

per cent for most bachelor

degree programs.

The cost for a typical
undergraduate program is
now $2,257 a year but it
will rise to $2,754 as of
May 1, the UNBC board
has decided.

There are equivalent in-
creases for master’s and
doctoral programs but
some will have higher fees
depending on the program.

The increases are about
on par with hikes being in-
Stituted at southern univer-
sities.

“Right now tuition re-
presents less than 20 per
cent of the actual educa-
tion cost,” said UNBC of-
ficial Rob van Adrichem.

Failure to raise tuition
would have meant cuts of
approximately $2 million
which would have meant
cuts to course offerings
and jobs, he added.

“The tuition fee in-
ctease will allow us to re-
instate some of those plan-
ned cuts, but we will still
have to reduce spending
by $1 million,” van Adri-
chem continued,

That’s being done by
eliminating three posi-
lions, one of which is al-
ready vacant, and by cut-
ting non-student services,
he said.

The total UNBC budget
for the year is $40,334 mil-
lion.
