School district to sell land
and houses to cut its deficit

To get out of the red, the
school board must slash
$114,000 from its $51.3
million budget by June
1999.

“The next round of cuts is
going ta be much more dif-
ficult,’’ said district secre-
tary treasurer Barry
Piersdorff last week.

“Every cut,” Piersdorff
said, ‘‘will be to the bone.
And every cost will show
right to the bottom line, like
a frog inside ofa snake.”

To get out of the red,
Piersdorf£ said the board
will undertake the rest of the

from an outside team which
outlined ways to help with
last year’s 41:7 million

Nisga’a
THE PROVINCIAL
government has assembled a
seasoned team of public re-
lations experts and has
given it a $2.5 million
budget to help sell the
Nisga’a treaty.

More than 20 people are
now quartered in an office
building behind the legisla-
‘ture in Victoria,

Initialed Aug. 4, the treaty
must still be ratified by the
Nisga’a, provincial and fed-
eral governments.

In charge of the team is
John Heaney, a top aide to
Mike Harcourt when he was
in power and who acted as
the government’s lead con-
tact on the Nanaimo bingo
scandal.

Also in the unit is Don
Zadravec, the communica-
tions director for the
employment and investment
mninistry, who was and still
is closely tied to the provin-
cial government’s rescue
and control over Skeena
Cellulose.

-Zadravec said team mem-
bers will continue to be in-
volved in issues connected
to their regelar functions
with goverment agencies
and ministries.

made layoffs to get to where
we are now,””

He said closing down the
Kilimat school board office
(value approximately
$600,000) will save dollars
as weil as selling off assets
($200,000) such as the 10
acre land parcel on Hal-
liwell Ave. across the street
from Uplands School,

Also to be sold are six
houses in Kitimat once used
as teacher residences.

At a public mecting last
week, the board agreed to
ask education minister Paul
Ramsey for approval to sell

the land and buildings.

The minister’s official
nod, however, could take up
to eight months.

At the meeting, Kitimat
trustee Peter King said he
was worried about selling
off land and the teacherages
at fire sale prices.

Piersdorff agreed that as-
sets shouldn’t be sold at
bargain basement prices, but
in order to meet a window
that may open months down
the road, the board needed
to get paper work started
now.

To cut costs, Terrace
trustee Marj Brown sug-
