AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 30, 1996 Thornhill’s future debated Duelling candidates tangle TWO VETERAN rivals squared off at the all candi- dates forum last when Thormhill area regional dis- trict candidates Les Wat- mough and incumbent Pegey Julseth battled it out. The future of Thomhill topped the agenda with Jul- seth saying she was in favour of amalgamating . with Terrace — in principle. “It's pointless ta start creating two layers of bureaucracy,’ she said, yeferring to the possible in- corporation of Thornhill, But Les Watmough was Jess than enthusiastic. He said that the errors found in the original restructuring study put the entire study into question. “This deal is not a good deal,’? he said, ‘‘Let’s wait until we do have a. good deal.”’ The duelling duo also dis- agreed on finding a way for Shames Mountain to repay its debt to the regional dis- trict. Julseth said that while the regional district hasn't received one payment from Shames, she wasn't ready to foreclose yet. : “There are programs that Shames can provide to the community as -a whole,” she said, referring to a pro- posed debt-for-discounts plan which would give the ski hill credit for price breaks to students and com- munity organizations, But Watmough called that scheme ‘‘a total non- starler,’’ and said that he was one of the board’s hardliners when he was director and the Shames is- sue was on tie table, “If I had gotten my way there probably wouldn’t be Joining forces NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE and Schoal District 88 have agreed to work together on educational goals when college president Michael Hill and school board chairman Mary Spooner signed a statement of shared goals. Hill described the new agreement as a natural progres- sion of the relationship which the college and school dis- trict have had for some time. Timing was particularly good for this, because how people access learning opportunities is undergoing a lot of change now. ‘This will make the transition easier,"’ said Hill. Some of the projects the two bodies will work on are providing Adult Basic Education courses, non-traditional programs and new initiatives. Ways to share work experi- ence opportunities and job shadowing would be explored, as would technology.
