Page B4 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 14, 1992 Bike helmets save lives Contributed October is Head/Brain Injury Awareness Month. When the brain is injured it can- not heal itself like a broken arm, Once the damage is done, its ef- fects may be ireversible. The brain is our control centre for everything we think, do and say. Damage to the brain may result in physical, behavioural, and cogni- tive disabilities. Head injury is the most com- mon cause of bicycle-related death among children, exceeding that caused by accidenta] poison- ings, falls and firearm injuries. The human skull is only 3/8ths of an inch thick and it has a tendency to crack under sudden extreme pressure, Bicycle accidents are the most common cause of head injury in children. bicyclists reduce their risk of brain injury in an accident by 88 per cent by wearing a helmet. Cyclists are cight times more likely to suffer brain damage from an accident if they don’t wear a helmet, Most accidents {more than 80 per cent) causing injury to chil- - dren occur Jess than five blocks from home. Only 15 per cent of bicycle ac- cidents amongst childrea involve motor vehicles. Two-thirds of bicycle accidents are caused by the rider falling off the bike. Injury prevention: Drive smart!
