What is a polyhedron, who ask? For an answer we had to go to the designer, creator and donor of the sculpture — J. Fred Weber, Open Learning Agency chairman, long- lime Terrace resident and founder of Skeena Broadcasters, ‘A polyhedron’ consists of seven flat planes,’ Weber says. “Each one a polygon with six sides and each polygon joined to every ‘other piece. It creates a doughnut shape — a solid sur- rounding a hole.” “At a mecting of the OLA board I was given this-mathemati- cal formula,”? Weber continues, “and challenged to creaté the de- sign it represented. It took a litle while, but at the next meeting of the board,.I had'a rough model ready.” - “And when a focal point, a sculpture, was needed for our new building, the polyhedron seemed the natural choice,’* The polyhedron was first creat- ed in 1977 by: Lajos Szilassi, a Hungarian“ mathemétician, ~ to show how 4 seven-coloured map can be drawn with no two ad- jacent regions the same colour. Weber . constructed this polyhedron for the institute in his basement | from. tluminam and steel, painted “in-primary colours and created a steel cradle to stand it upright. It:created so much iiterest there: that his fam- ily had almost . adopted it as a member the past year. © Weber is a founding member of the Knowledge Network, the .
