The Caledonia senior high school grad, who left here in 1984, is the daughter of Mrs. -Rose Thomas. Her. interest in Pentathlon came about as she worked toward a degree in social work at the University of Victo- ria. _ Married this past April in Cal- gary, Crystal became a swimming lifeguard in Alberta as she trained for the five-sport Pentathlon that she picked up while at university. In her second year as a Pentathlon competitor, she won the gold medal ai the B.C. Summer Games - in 1988, Her number-one B.C. status earned Crystal a trip to Austria and two jaunts to Russia in a year ‘and a half. She is currently © ranked fifth in Canada. A-Pentathlete for women under- goes five sports: « - ee ° stadium horse jumping + fencing (epee) © 200-metre swim. + 2,000-kilometre running course ¢ .22 calibre handgun pistol shooting. She and her husband have just moved into a new home where Crystal is in training to go to the world championships in Australia next year, ‘Women’s Pentathlon will be admitted into the next Olympic Games in Spain. If she earns a top-three spot for Canada at Aus- tralia, she'll get a trip to Barcelona. Crystal told us her sport is rather expensive, although she is sup- plied with a horse in competition where they must complete six jumps.
