There’s a new service in town
worthy of note. It’s called the
Lawyer’s Referral Program. What

it means in basic terms is that
Terrace area residents can get a
lawyer with expertise in the speci-
fic field they need, and the first
half-hour of consultation costs $10.

| Lawyers offer first-meeting discount

As explained by Terrace lawyer
Ed DeWaile, the program isn’t
exactly new here. It’s been in
place since last fall. But all the
bugs have been worked out in the
last few months and the service is
now ready to meet all the legal
referral needs of the area, which
includes Greater Terrace, Kitimat,
Stewart and the Nass Valley.

From anywhere within this area,
people in need of legal help can
phone the Lawyer’s Referal Pro-
gram at 635-9109 and state the
nature of their legal concern — a
contract dispute, family problems,
criminal charges or a motor
vehicle incident are a few
examples. A worker at the Lax
Ghels law office in the Kermode
Friendship Centre will give the
caller the name of a local lawyer
who specializes in the required

field. The prospective client makes
an appointment, and for the $10
fee discusses the problem with the
lawyer and then makes an edu-
cated decision on whether to drop
the matter or proceed.

At -regular rates that half-hour
might cost anywhere from $40 to
$60,

DeWalle says the service, spon-
sored by the B.C. branch of the
Canadian Bar Association and the
Law Foundation of B.C., is
designed to offer easier and more
efficient access for everyone to
appropriate legal advice. It was
established in the lower mainland
in 1955 and has slowly spread to
areas of need. Last year, over
40,000 B.C. residents called their
local Lawyer’s Referral Service for
help. The demand for the service
is yet to be established in this area
but DeWalle says he’s certain the
program will be well used.
