‘Patronage’ victim hen the Vancouver Times was born the PT stated in an editorial on that auspicious occasion that too many factors surrounding its birth predicted an early demise. To successfully be a competitor to the “free enter- prizer” barons of the Pacific Press, with their “Liberal” Sun and “Goldwater” Province, a daily of the Times’ stan- dard requires a few million instead of a few thousand dol- lars in the “kitty” to start off with; either that or the whole-hearted backing of the big multi-million dollar mon- opoly advertizers. The Times had neither, and least of all the “patron-- age”’ of the big advertizers. Their advertizing patronage, the life-blood of the other two Vancouver papers, is the price paid for the prompt delivery of the “policy” tune called for. : We believe the Times was sincere in its initial outlook to give Vancouver and other readers something more than pre-digested monopoly pablum for their daily newspaper fare. But it obviously didn’t take into account the news- paper-killing power of big monopoly “sabotage”, which can only be outweighed, not by a few thousand subscribers, but only by hundreds of thousands. . To win those hundreds of thousands a paper like the Times must project a specific policy, rather than periodic. excursions “‘left-of-center” or “something for everybody”’. It was (and is) a nice thought, but a daily newspaper can- not survive on such illusions. Others before the Times have tried it, and met an early demise. Nevertheless, we hope the Times can weather the storm. Insult to injury .S. President Johnson’s recent “appeal’’ to the USSR to “work together for peace” serves to illustrate how far hypocritic insolence can go in an effort to cover up crime and appear “virtuous”. It also serves to illustrate the low opinion the spokesman for aggressive U.S. imper- ialism hold for the intelligence of the common people, in- cluding those of his own country. President Johnson speaks as though it were the Soviet Union or the countries of the Socialist world who had their armed forces and their war instigators in Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, the Congo or other areas of the world aS o oes THE EVIL OF POWER —The Dispatcher where people strive for colonial liberation and the right of self-government. ~ “‘We want peace” says President Johnson, while U.S. air and ground forces rain death and destruction upon the. - people of Vietnam, North and South. ‘We want peace”, while U.S. Marines seek to deprive the people of the Dom- inican Republic of their right to their own democratically- elected government. “‘We want peace”, and the murdered people of the Congo, including their first Premier Patrice Lumumba are mute evidence of the kind of “‘peace”’. It is U.S. and not Soviet troops which are committing these atrocities and aggression against humanity and against world peace. Johnson’s “appeal” is directed to the wrong address. It should have been marked “for home de- livery” only. Hence the “Dear Hal” letter from Ben- nett’s “Man Friday” Al William- son to Prime Minister Pearson’s “Man Friday” Hal Dornan, “pleading” the case for million- aire Stonehill, and signed *W.A.
