A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 15, 2003 small loggers in jeopardy Dear Sir: l am a small scale Salvage contractor in Terrace and just love CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD our beautiful community r but have just exper- ienced the God-like TT e control SCI has on us small scale contractors. Before Christmas | received a phone call from Carnaby (SCI) that they are no longer accepting small scale operation timber. The fact is only big time lagging contractors will be the principal operators and the rest of us small compa- nies starve to death. ] am a tiny company and have a small crew yet the spill over brings local employment of up to 30 people. The mill would not accept my last two loads of wood, putting me in a head-in-noose situation. Now I have to lay off and possibly leave the north in search of a more secure Jife. In five years | have seen SCI hold the workers and Let’s turn that schoo! ato a palace Dear Sir: : Here’s a plan to reduce the school district budget, re- juvenate our local economy, and make our Premier happy. The city should buy the new school on the hill from the school board. It will reduce the amount of money the school district pays on heat and maintenance for a building it no longer needs and has never used. . The city should then make a gift of the building to Gordon Campbell to use as a premierial palace. It has a circular drive, an elegant-and spacious entrance foyer, and many large rooms which would be appropriate for occasional premierial meetings as well as places far re- laxation and slumber. The large grounds could be divi- ded into two sections, one for beautiful and lush pre- mierial gardens. The rest could be converted into a small farm for one or two families of serfs. I planned on retiring in Terrace and have another 30- plus years of hard labour ahead. So to all the small scale salvagers, my hat is off to you and for the New scl, bah humbug. Sean Coulter, Terrace, B.C. And with just a few renovations (business for local tradespsrsons), the new school on the hill could be a true gem in the throne of our government. Imagine, if you will, a bank of urinals removed from the boys’ wash- room and replaced with a premierial jacuzzi. Think of the money such a venture could bring, The tourism dollars. The lobbyists. The hangers on. The cele- brities. The media. The visiting dignitaries. Even Lord J. Pattison may one day come to call: he might want to provide his hoards of part time employees the chance to pay homage to his real and true actual personage. And what if the school board doesn’t want to sell us the school? Well, let them suffer. We can simply use the vacant provincial jail. An elementary school or a " jail. Either would be just dandy for our Premier. Tom Boston, Terrace, B.C.
