Sobol enters contest for Skeena NDP nod THE NASS Valley doctor who drew surprising support in the 1993 federal election as a fringe candidate plans to run again — but this time for the NDP. Isaac Sobol, who three years ago ran for the Na- tional Party, is the medical health officer for the Nisga’a Valley Health Board. He’s. temporarily in Van- couver, finishing a Master’s degree in community medi- cine, Should Sobol be selected by the NDP as its candidate, itll be like old home week in the federal election ex- pected sometime this year. Skeena Reform MP Mike Scott wants his party’s nomination again and Rhoda Witherly, who ran for the Liberals in 1993, is considering a return engage- ment. No dite has yet been set for the Skeena NDP nomination. Smithers resident Ken Alton, 40, has declared his “ Issac Sobol lottes working on a Forest Renewal B.C, training pro- gram. Last year he served for a time with the Bulkley Valley treaty advisory com- miltee. Considering a run at the nomination is former Van- couver Island NDP MP Ray Skelly. He’s now the principal at the Greenville school and is intention to run for the NDP nomination. He’s a long time Bulkley Valley resident, was a faller for 16 years and has been involved in the IWA local there, Alton is now on the Char- the president of the NDP’s Skeena federal constituency association. Skelly’s brother, Bob, was a provincial NDP leader in the 1980s. He was defeated in the 1986 provincial elec- tion by Socred leader Bill News In Brief Police stand-off REPORTS OF A domestic dispute at a Terrace apartment complex last week drew police into what ended up as a five-hour stand-off. ‘ . Terrace RCMP were sumzoned at 9:44 p.m. January 23, to the Park Manor Apartinents when a resident called to report secing a man physically drag his wife into one of the apartments, Police say the man locked himself in his apartment with his common-law wife and he wouldn’t fet her leave the residence. The man-also threatened-police when they ar- rived at the scene and a lengthy stand-off ensued. Staff sergeant Doug Wheler of the Terrace detachment says a police negotiator quickly gol the suspect on the phone, Over the next five hours, the suspect threatened to harm police, himself and his wife with a variety of weapons, including guns, knives and bombs. Nine police officers attended the scene, including a com- bined effort of Emergency Response Teams from Terrace and Prince Ruperi. The teams moved in just afler 3 a.m. to forcibly remove the man. No firearms were uncovered, but Sergeant Wheler says police did find knives and a crow- bar. . A 46-year-old Terrace resident was taken into custody and faces numerous charges. He is also currently under psychiatric examination. Caught in the act TWO PEOPLE were arrested Jan. 19 after police noticed them trying to break into a local business. Two Terrace plain-clothes officers observed one mani al- tempt a burglary at 1:30 a.m. January 19. When ap- proached, the man jumped into a vehicle with another man and fled the scene. The vehicle was stopped a short distance away and searched, Numerous break-and-enter tools were un- covered, along with stolen property that is believed to have originated from various break-ins between Terrace and Prince George. The suspects were taken in custody to the Terrace detachment so the matter could be further investigated. Vander Zalm, NDP constituency associa- tion officials met in Terrace Sunday to go over nomina- tion procedure plans and to lay the groundwork for the election. Sobol wasted ne time last week in keying on several issues. “The Liberal government has failed the north,”’ Sobol said. “There has been no ef- fective opposition from Mike Scott and bis Reform Party, who are only con- cemed with their extreme, mean-spirited agenda,” Sobol said Scott has been an embarrassment {to the riding when it comes lo na- tive land claim issues in par- ticular. “He has distorted history and distorted the reality of First Nations peoples’ lives,” Sobol said. ‘‘He has adopted a strategy of trying to polarize people rather than trying «to — build bridges.”’ Northerners will recall Sobol most from the impact he made at all candidates forums during the 1993 election campaign, where his speeches drew thunderous applause. Opposing political campaigners conceded Sobol had pul in the strongest showing and ex- pressed relicf he was only running for the fledgling National Party, “Tf Isaac were running for the NDP, we'd be in real trouble,’”’ Reform campaign manager Barry Carter ad- mitted after the 1993 forum in Terrace. In the end, Sobol gathered 2,425 votes — one of the strongest performances by a National Party candidate in B.C, He finished fourth, behind Scott, Witherly and NDP candidate Joe Barrett. Sobol joined the NDP shortly after his loss in that election. Sobol said he hasn't been recruited by NDP party offi- cials, and that he’s putting his name forward to see whal happens. “Joe Barrett had asked if I was interested and gave me some encouragement,’’ he added. . Asked if individual north- westemers had urged him to run again, Sobol said; ‘‘] had people suggesting that from the day after the last election.”’ Meanwhile, the Skeena Reform Party constituency association has set March 22 as the date for its nomina- tion meeting.
