A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 29, 1996 sewage seeping into Lakelse Lake LAKELSE LAKE is in real danger of being polluted by inadequate septic systems of area’ residents, according tegional district directors. Lakelse area director Sandy Sandhals told olher Kitimat Stikine regionai district inem- bers Saturday that he’s been fielding’com- plaints from residents at the south end of the lake who say scwage is a major prob- lem. “People are filling ‘their lots with six feet of gravel to get their septic fields above flood levels,'’ said Sandhals. ‘'Fhat sewage just drains through the rocks.”’ Sandhals expressed concern about the en- vironmental impact of such activity, given the importance of Lakelse Lake 1o the region for-recrealion and. fishing. Thorbill director Peggy Julseth was also concerned: Julseth recently toured the area with environmental health ‘officer Ron Craig. . “{ was shocked that many of the peaple around the lake’are under the flood levels, yet they’re still putting systems. in,’’ said Julseth. ‘‘And pollution levels in the lake are increasing.’ Julseth pointed out that many of the low- lying bouses are on small lots, with poor soil types like clay. Many of the older residences have never had proper seplic systems installed. According to Julseth, Lakelse Lake flushes fairly frequently, which has pre- vented the-.problem from ‘being’ much worse. But she said something has to be done soon. : ‘There are some grave concems about the situation,” Julseth said. ‘‘Over the long term, community sewer is the only solution for Lakelse Lake.” Tankers for THE THORNHILL FIRE Department will soon be getting two new trucks to replace its aging equipment and take some of the load off the existing fleet. | The Kitimat Stikine Regional District Sat- urday approved the purchase of both a new pumperfanker and a new tanker. The pumper currently in usc is over 20 ycars old. A down payment will be put on. the vehicles with the remainder of the nearly CITY COUNCILLORS are looking at a plan to create a salmon- rearing ground on Ferry Island. Last week the city’s recreation commilice agreed to look at a plan to convert the old © gravel pit on the south cnd of Ferry Island into a rearing ground for salmonid. Some of the fish which were hatched at the Decp Creek or Howe Creck hatcheries could then be wansferred to these rearing grounds to malure ina safe environment. “We have a nursery for.them and now we're looking at setiing up a daycare,”’ said councillor’ David Hull, explaining the theory behind a Gish rearing ground. Chris Spangl of the forests ministry sug- gested creating the rearing grounds by deepening the gravel pit, and ensuring a subsurface water flow to the site, 1 He thougit Ferry Island would be suitable since access is good, communily groups could belp in the project, and it would bea good tourist altraction. In coming years ity has. a- Sandy Sandhals The board decided to carry out a feasibility study. to investigate the pos- sibility of bringing sewer to the areca. If such a system were installed, it would likely be similar 19 the low-pressure system just. installed in the Queensway-Churchill Drive area. A referendum would be required before any such project could proceed, The feasability study — estimated to cost up to $40,000 — won’t go ahead until 1997, however, because there isn’t enough money in the 1996 budget In the meantime, the board will relay their concems to the Skeena Health Unit and ask them to look into the situation further. Thornhill $300,000 total cost to be paid over five years. Once of the considerations in the purchase was to make the Thornhill Fire Department equipment compatible with that of the City of Terrace. It is hoped that this will make the departments more efficient and save money. Afier the new trucks are paid-off, the de- partment will consider replacing its ladder- wuck. fishy plan anglers would also benefit from the project, “To have salmon caming, right to the fishermen at the turn of the century has some definite appeal,” wrole Spangl, The money from the project would come from a Watershed Restoration Program run by the forests ministry. Steve Scott, head of the city’s recreation department, liked the looks of the project, It wouldu’t adversely affect the island, ” said Scott. “Tt seems like a good idea in very rough principal,’’ added Hull. He said the city would have to know more information about the timeline, budget and exactly what was involved, However, he said Ferry Island seems like a natural spol for a project like this, Al- ready mauy local children go down to the area to look at Jarge numbers of ladpoles and salamanders, “Ferry Island can become a gem in our urban crown,”’ said Hull, ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 1996 KERMODE FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY 3313 Kalum Street,Terrace, B.C.
