A8- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 31, 1994 Talstra,, Wozney fingered as Liberal MLA possibles DON’T BE SURPRISED if two area mayors pop up as potential Liberal party candidates in the next provinelal election. “I haven’t talked to them, I don’t know if they are interested. But are very attractive pos- sibilities,”’ says provincial Liber- al leader Gordon Campbell of Terrace mayor Jack Talstra and Kitimat mayor Rick Wozney, The two have been iong time Liberal party members and sup- porters and both of their com- munities fall within the provincial Skeena riding. - This would make Talstra and Wozney potential adversaries should they both want to run for ihe Skeena Liberal nomination. A former Vancouver mayor and head of a provincial association of municipalities, Campbell said he’s looking for candidates from contacts he made from his years in civic politics. “The key to the new politics we're organizing is to look for experienced people with the same ideclogical beliefs and ask for their heip,’’ he said. In town as part of a northern tour last week, Campbell did ad- mit that a lot of organizing work is needed, particularly in riding associations in more rural areas, “T's fair to say they’re not at the level we'd like them to be at, but we are gaining new members all the time,’’ he said. The Liberal party ran Juanita Hatton in the 1991 provincial e election. Withoul a budget and without a large campaign, Hatton ‘Tan third with 1,151 vates, Campbell said the creation of a provincial Reform party will present a challenge to the Liber- als. “It’s a bit of ashame when the major issue really is defeating the NDP,” he said. , And the leader did wonder at politicians who could leave the Social Credit patty to become provincial Reformers and in doing so, depart from a party that has a large debt. Campbell said he will intro- duced legislation requiting the provincial goyermment to balance the provincial budget, “Accountability starts at the top. If the budget is 10 per cent over, the Premier would take a 10 per cent cut in pay,” said Camp- bell. “Obviously that’s not going to reduce the deficit, but it is a sign there will be accountability for the government’s actions.’’. Campbell also wants to creale an independent public service commission to avoid hints of or the possibility of patronage. “T's not enough to say we're going to make changes. We must show people how we're going to,’’ he said of Liberal policies, The Liberal leader also advo- cates a more open land claims ne- gotiations process. “The critical concept of land claims is to clarify and provide Solution sought - for local ‘freeway’ THE CITY is going to investigate the idea of turning Davis and Park into feeder streets to reduce traffic congestion on Walsh Ave. The idea was raised by city planning committee members as a way of addressing concerns of Walsh Ave, residents, who have petitioned the city to muzzle the joud *‘boom’? cars that drivé, by ate at night. The city would have to agquire several properties — through ei- ther negotiation or expropriation —- to open up Davis and Park be- tween Eby St. and Kenney St “I know the city hates to play the heavy,”’ said councillor David Hull, ‘But J think it’s imperative that the city start now and start opening those streets up.” Better access for emergency vehicles and easing traffic con- gestion are two good reasons for doing it, Hull said. “Tt would be a real sensible, forward-thinking move,’ he added. City staff are to estimate the cost of acquiring the properties in question. Walsh has turned into a “freeway”’, Hull said, because it’s the only continuous street be- tween Eby and Kenney. Engineering director Stew Christensen noted the highways ministry is considering installing a traffic light at the corner of Kenney Si. and Hwy 16, He sald the light might also help ease congestion by en- couraging more traffic from the bench to take the highway. “People don’t go down Kenney right now because It’s so hard to turn left there,’ Christensen told the committee. Residents suggested other measures to slow traffic — such as speed bumps or a slop sign. But that idea could backfire, ac- cording io the city’s Denise Fisher, who noted the addition of College gets lab NORTHWEST COMMUNITY College is spending nearly $230,000 to add anolher science lab at its Terrace campus, It’s going in on the second Aloor of the main education building and will take up the space of two classrooms. College official Peter Crompton said the contract to Anhorn Con- struction of Kitimat for the biol- ogy, chemisiry and physics lab is worth $266,846, ‘We had first thought of build- ing a science lab for biology only bul then decided we didn’t want io be in a position two years down the road {to need . more facilities so we decided to expand the plan,’ said Cromplon, © stop signs sometimes results in even more tire-squealing and drag-racing than before, Residents also noted the city’s noise bylaw is useless without RCMP enforcement. “T was told we don’t. have enough law enforcement officers to. enforce this,” resident Maric ‘vad . a aay SHIVERS tolf'the committee... They’re tired of being treated as if they’re stupid,’? continued Campbell of the need for greater participation, “Citizens have the right to par- ticipate in the civics of their com- munities,’’ said Campbell. “Tf you open up the process you climinate the belief some- thing is being done to me — the belief they’re going to get me.’’ “Governments often ask ‘‘why . don’t citizens trust us.’’ My ques- tion is why don’t governments trust the citizens,”’ said Camp- bell. -WE’RE MOVING!
