Page A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 2, 1993 Three letters on ambassador story Dear Sit: T was very disturbed to see the quote attributed to me in the arti- cle about the Terrace Youth Am- bassador event (The Terrace Standard, May 26). Ths quoie I refer to is the labelling of the Miss Terrace competition as a “bimbo pageant’’. I did not use that term when speaking to your reporter, I did make reference to the fact that before this year the emphasis was More on beauty, put J recog- nize that other attributes, like speaking ability and ability to project a good image for Terrace, were also very important. ° I think it is important to give proper recognition to the many businesses and individuals who supported this year’s event with Dear Sir: Tam writing in response to an article published in the May 26 paper on the Terrace Youth Am- bassador contest. Glenys George is a very dedi- cated and hard working young lady, who did not win the contest because she looked good in a ba- thing suit. She won based on her effort, poisc, knowledge and speaking abilities. ~ What you have done, has turned her into a bad mouthing, atrogant brat. Which is far from the truth. She ‘did not say ‘‘bimbo pageant.” The comment was made, but Glenys did not say it, -and the writer knew that. The writer just slapped her name bes- the consequences. Glenys will now elways have to defend herself to the public and past contestants. She is an up- standing student here in Terrace who does not deserve the im- planted reputation by your writer. Even if the comment was made, “is your paper such an unpopular, gossip shoveling one that you need {o trash someone’s reputa- tion for a few dollars? I believe an apology is due to Glenys and the Terrace Youth Ambassador Society for dis- crediting them both. Dawn Thomsen, Miss Terrace Shopping Centre and Miss Talent kk kkk Dear Sir: As Miss Terrace 1991, I was more than a little offended at the comment attributed’ fo Glenys George about the Miss Terrace Pageant in past years being just a ‘bimbo pageant’? where only the prettiest girls won. Yes, the contest this year was different. It had a, different name, males were allowed to enter and winners received scholarships. However, as in every other year, evening gowns were still modeled and Glenys George still happily received her crown. During my. year as Miss Ter- . race, I regarded myself as the city’s ambassador — mot a “‘bimbo.'"* I think every other Miss Terrace would agree with me. The other major scholarships donated by Wilkinson Business Machines, Woolworth’s, McAl- pine and Co., Wayne Braid and Northwest Counselling also made a major contribution to the suc- cess of the event.
