Skeena at Zone TWO TERRACE teams battled it out at the junior girls volleyball Zone Finals two weckends ago in Kitimat. But when the dust finally settled, it was a Hazelton team that took top spot. a Skeena Jr. Secondary and Centennial Christian schools were both represented by excellent tcams al the Zones, but only Skeena made il to the finals. Skeena's first challenge was Kitimat. The Terrace troop won in straight sets, but they were close at 15-1] and 15-12. That battle proved to be merely a warm-up for the girls who had a really tough lime with Prince Rupert in their next match. Rupert took the first game, edging past Skeena in a tight scrap 16-14. That meant another loss would put Skecna out of contention. But the girls weren't aboul to give up and they rallied for two tough wins 15-13 and 15-10, The win put Skeena up against their rivals from across the street — Centen- nial Christian, who have al- ways provided tough oppo- sition in the past. second Finals Skeena casily won the first game 15-5, but Centennial Christian came back with a vengeance, They blasted past Skeena, holding them to just one point and handily winning 15-1, However, Skeena bounced back in the rubber match, maintaining their composure to win 15-5. Thai game saw Shannon Chalupiak score nine straight service points. _. The win put Skeena’s very tired girls into the finals against Hazelton, and frus- tration set in, The girls fought cut a very long first set, only to lose 15-13. And the girls couldn't hang on through. the second set, losing 15-6 to end up with second place at the Zones. Coach Frank Martelli says the competition at the event was pretty intense, “All the teams showed a ‘lot of improvements from the start of the season,’” he says. “‘And that forced Skeena to display _ their best.”’ Marrelli says that espe- cially strong performances were had by Nancy Arbuah, Heather Kelly, Andrea Davis and Shannon Chalupiak.
