SCURVY Scurvy, a disease of infants which resulta from a lack of Vit- amin C, is surprisingly quite com- mon, in some parts of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association re- ports. Scurvy, which generally shows Itself at the average of. seven to 12 months, is preventable and does not ocair in the breast-fed infant. The baby with scurvy us- ually shows increasing irritability and severe tenderness of the limbs. Often the infant will cry in great pain when picked up and even screams if approached by anyone, When suffering from’ the di- sense, the child’s gums become swollen and tender and show some bleeding into the tissues. This causes pain and the baby may refuse his feeding, often cry- ing with hunger, yet unable to eat. Scurvy is easily cured and easily prevented.
