I am a Grade 7 student in the «Pro-
gramme cadre.»

One day I was talking in French to my
Jriend at one of the Nanaimo malls.

Aman came up to us and said: «We are in
Canada here, speak English |»

Who does he think he is? Are we not in a
free country? I could not help but wonder if we
were speaking Japanese, would he have said the
same thing?

Probably not.

When I arrived home, I told my parents
about the incident. They became very upset.

Iwas born ina French community in New
Brunswick. If I had not moved to B.C., Imight not
have had the opportunity to become as bilingual
as I am now.

Why then, are there somany adults against
our services being given in French, when these
same people speak but one language?

Because of my parents to the U.S. Iwould
do my best to preserve my French, but I don't
think that Iwould be able to receive services in my
own language.

Did you know that New Brunswick is the
only province in Canada that is officially
bilingual?

Many Canadians think that bilingualism
is a big and unnecessary expense. I say, why not
spend money for our two official languages, and
most of all keep them official.
