comm COUNT MAR 7 1977 Mayor and Council February 25th, 1977 L.D. Pollock City Administrator Re: "Welcome to Port Coquitlam’ Information Sign In September of last year, Council received a request from the Kinsmen Club to erect road signs at the entrances to the City, in particular, the Pitt River Road entrance. As Council had already received a similar enquiry from the Canadian Legion, I was asked to co-ordinate the setting up of a sign or signs, and ask the Kinsmen to assist in this project. I have had several meetings with the Kinsmen representatives and they, in turn, have acted as liason with the Service Clubs. There are four Service Clubs interested in participating —- these are the Legion, the Lion's Club, the Kinsmen and the Elks. The type of sign we have been discussing would be a "Welcome to Port Coquitlam" sign incorporating the City’s population, and also the Club ‘logo’ or emblems for each of the Service Clubs participating. We intend to keep the sign simple to enable easy maintenance and it would appear quite feasible to have these signs built in our own Sign Shop so that the initial cost and future maintenance cost could be kept to a minimun. Based on constructing four signs, the construction cost would be approximately $175. to $200. per sign and the Service Clubs would agree to a five-way split, therefore each participant would only be required to pay $35. to $40. per sign. The one item that has not been concluded is the location of the signs. The Service Clubs would like to locate them at each of the entrances to town, i.e. at the East end, and West end of the Lougheed Highway; the Pitt River Road entrance; and the Kingsway route. It will be sometime before we can plan on erecting signs on the Lougheed Highway, however, we could proceed at this time on the Pitt River Road and Kingsway entrances. Perhaps existing small ‘Welcome to Port Coquitlam’ sign located just West of Shaughnessy Street on Pitt River Road could be removed and replaced with one of the newer signs. The Kingsway location could be in the vicinity of Bedford Street on the East side of the C.P. Rail right- of-way where there is also an existing sign. Perhaps Council could discuss the final location for these two signs and comment on the proposed design for the sign. I have a small colour rendering of the proposal which I will have available for Council on Monday evening. , . ss L.D. Pollock
