AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 12, 2000 TERRACE STANDARD Business REVIEW He did it again TOM SHEICHUK has done it again. The Alm-Wood Con- tracting log truck driver won his second 100 per cent load compliance award from the Ministry of Transportation and High- ways, June 28, The award means that Sheichuk met the mini- stry’s weight standards for the entire year. Sheichuk, who's been driving for 30 years says he’s developed a knack for guessing the weight of his load. “There is a lot of guess work involved,” he said. “Sometimes you're load- ing up hill, sometimes down hill. There is no such thing as loading a truck on flat ground in the bush.” Because of the uneven ground, drivers have to take into account the extra weight on the truck and add that to the overall es- timate of their load. Sheichuk wasn’t the only driver congratulated for his compliance. Close to 20 local truck companies were highligh- ted for their 100 per cent and 99 per cent load com- pliancy at the award cer- emony. Drivers received certifi- cates and decals marking their achievernent. TOM SHEICHUK stands in front of his lagging truck. The truck driver with Almwood Contracting wan a 100 per cent load compliance award, June 28. David Belford, spokes- person for the awards said in the past five years he’s seen a dramatic increase in the number of truckers receiving the awards. “The participation rate has definitely gone up,” Belford said. The load compliance awards started in 1995 as part of a provincial initia- tive to address truck safety concerns. ICBC, the RCMP, the North West Loggers Asso- ciation and the Ministry of Transportation and High- ways were on hand to pre- sent the awards.
