The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 8, 2000 - A7 WORKERS HAVE begun the task of preparing the foundations needed for two bridges on the Nisga’a Highway between Greenville and New Aiyansh in the Nass Valley. They replace older ones. PHOTO COURTESY RANDY PENNER. Old bridges replaced in the Nass Valley WORK HAS begun on a contract awar- ded last fall to construct two replacement bridges on the Nisga’a Highway between Greenville and New Aiyansh. The $1 million contract to Formula Contractors is part of a seven-year, $41 million plan to improve access into and in.the Nass Valley north of Terrace. Highways ministry official David Bel- ford last week said the bridge foundation work now going on is taking place at a low water time of the year so as to mini- mize impacts on fish habitat. -“That’s an important consideration for this type of work,” said Belford. Last year, workers created more than 1,300 square metres of spawning channels and juvenile rearing habitat for coho as part of the project. - Workers are now pounding in pipe pile foundations for the cast-in-place concrete Officials probe | vehicle blazes TERRACE RCMP and fire departments are investiga- ting two suspicious car fires in the 4700 block of Loen in Terrace’s horse- shoe the end of February. At about 1:30 a.m. Sun- day, Feb. 27 the Terrace RCMP reported a car fire to the Terrace fire depart- ment. When fire crews got to the scene they found a Chevy Nova engulfed in _ flames. Deputy fire chief Rick Owens said the fire was under control within minutes, but the car is a write off, “It’s burnt to a shell,” he said, Just when the crews were tearing down the fire lines, crews noticed a sec- ond fire in the passenger seat of a 1992 Ford Ex- plorer across the street. The fire melted the middle console and part of the front dash, ruined one of two front bucket seats and singed the ceiling of the cab before the fire was extinguished. - Owens said inspectors believe the second fire may have started when someone threw a piece of burning paper through the Explorer’s open window. But, he said, no one was ‘spotted leaving the area, The Chevy Nova fire is a mystery, said Owens, because of the. extent of the damage, All four doors were locked when the blaze started. “It’s pretty hard to tell what went wrong,” said Owens. No one was injured in the fires and damage is expected to top $30,000. If you have information on the fires call Crime Stoppers at 635-8477 (TIPS). | Crimestoppers offers re- wards for information lead- ing to the arrest and con- viction of. people responsible for crimes. They will support the bridge material. The bridges cross Ansedagen Creek and Kwinyarh Creek. Each bridge is 11 metres wide with one having a span of 26 metres and the other 32 metres. They re- place aging log stringer bridges. The bridge work is part of a larger pro- ject along the stretch of road to raise it above the level of ihe Nass River. Spring flooding along the road has caused problems and, at times, has made the road unusable. Workers on the project come under the jurisdiction of Highway Constructors Ltd., a provincial government subsidiary, which requires them to be paid union- level wages. If they are not already union members, they must become part of a construction union for the duration of the project. - the new fordfocus 2000'se © $236 /mo: 36-manth lease with $2,845 down Purchase; 418,907** “© 2OL split pari induction engine « Autamatic transmissian * Airconditioning +.” “Fully independent multi-link rear suspensian system plus stiff, light body structure= great driving dynamics + SccuriLock’™ anti-theft system * All doar remote entry wilh - ve. power door locks « CD stereo system * Dual Second Generation front air bags.” : * © Driver's seat manual height adjustinent + 60/40 splil-fold rear scat 2000 Cavaclan Can oF THE YEAR AUTOMOBILE JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION OF CANADAT and longer... lighter, a Reduce che health risks associnced a [ ef Vv oT Wa nt Vi ot with excess weight, Live better o cee ain a : - Z , a?
