Demonstration forest

IT’S BEEN a good year
out at the forest service’s
Red - Sands. demonstration
forest near Terrace.

The site is home to hiking
trails and a camping area.

And: - -every summer,
hundreds: of people — in-
cluding community — and

school groups — tour the
forest, often. listening to
forest service guides give
informative talks.

This year, the site received
an added bonus in the form
of a Forest Renewal BC
grant. The money was used
to upgrade trails and build
an outdoor classroom.

The trail upgrade included
an 80° metre, wheelchair-
accessible boardwalk. And
Carl Johannson from the
forest service. says that
turned. out to be a real
bargain. ©

“Twas looking for the
best price for lumber when
someone | offered’ me free
cedar," he ‘says. “‘So we

had the wood miiled on-site
and everything worked out
just great.”

A wheelchair-accessible
outdoor classroam was also
built onthe site, which will

be used to help educate stu-
dents and adults alike on
forestry issues.

The classroom will
certainly be helpful during
national forestry week each
May. This year, more than
400 = grade-five students
toured the site,

Johannson says that the

little different this time
around,

‘‘We decided to do a little
more hands-on instead of
just @ walk and talk,’’ he

says.

So the youths got tc try
oul fire-fighting equipment,
and compasses, as well as
plant ees and cut rounds so
they could count the rings in
the wood — an indication of
a tree’s age.

The service also had a
horse logger out with his
team of horses to give a
demonstration.

In fact, the hands-on ap-
proach was so successful
that Ichannson says they
forest service will likely fol-
low a similar format next
year.
