Al6 Terrace Review — Wednesday, June. 26, 1991-5 City may propose -— customs compromise - Everyone. but the federal govern- _ ment has’ agreed for years that ‘customs service at the Terrace- Kitimat airport. could do “great things for our economy. Skiers from Alaska, for example, ‘might spend a lot of money here during a weekend or week-long visit to. Shames Mountain. But the federal - government says the service would cost too much, and besides, there is already a customs officer in Kitimat who travels to the airport as required... if he’s availabic. The Terrace-Kitimat Airport Advisory Committee, though, may have come up with a solution to the stand-off. In a letter to council, the committee admits a full-time customs officer isn’t really required. They point out that this is the reason Canada Customs repeat- edly says "No". They also point out that other options have been tried and failed; the RCMP and the Corps of Commissionaires. But what about Terrace’s bylaw en- ‘forcement officer doubling as a part-time customs agent? City aldermen ‘like the idea. _ They've sent it to city council’s - ‘Finance Committee, chaired by. Danny Sheridan, for full consider- * ation. There may be-hurdle to high — 7 to leap, however. As good as the. idea might be, it’s no idea at all if Canada Customs doesn’t agree. Pedestrian injured The Terrace Fire Department reports no fire activity during the past week but Rescue O01 did attend Kalum St. and Lakelse Ave. at 9 a.m. June 20 after an elderly female pedestrian was struck by a car. The woman suffered a frac- tured knee and was transported to Miils Memorial Hospital by ambu- lance, Later the same day, she was transferred by air ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital.
