ednesday, February 9, 1966 TERRACE “Omineca’’ HERALD, TERRACE, BRITISH COLUMBIA Page Five ditor : errace “Omineca” Herald m The letter of Art Curfman in the mssue of February 2, with its too meronfoartable logic, in expounding meieaven as being a place where mehere would be no churches, im- plies that life here on earth would me better without them. For the sake of argument, let Sis assume that the athiest and menostic may have a point, if, as t appears, there is no scientific proof that there is a God, and mechurch leaders seem unable to moroduce such proof, there is no mneed for the organization which rerves God, or the house of Gad. If man’s being is simply the re- mult of evolution, the simple, com- Me ortable explanation, how then did tuch beliefs come into being? m™ I believe that the Laws mi Moses, were those rules that Meenen of that time had learned. Meshrough centuries of trial and er- mor, and were necessary for man to wontinue to exist in an orderly Seenanner, without fear of his nelgh- bor. Were they inspired by God mer were they the result of man’s sevillingness to learn from past ex- meeperience? Jf there was no God to inspire Seehem, from whence came their in- mellect? mae «That the church, with its rules meof behaviour, has survived cen- memiuries, seems toe prove that the paemancients who founded it were on mathe right track. However, I believe that some- awhere along the way the church mhas goofed to some extent. Many mez times have I heard church Jead- ers say, in effect, “Come to Church merand be saved,” or “Follow Christ me and save your soul.” This sort of am importuning seems to me to give w to church membership a justifica- tion which is entirely a selfish mo- tive. ; Thus we have churches full of members, there to save their own souls who care not about the rest of humanity. In fact in their daily lives they hold some members of humanity in contempt for no other Teason than a different income level or different colored skin. Oddly enough, the younger gen- eration, with its unspolied habit of rationalizing, appears to view the whole situation with a critical eye, mentally dissect it, then dis- card it while feeling its way for something better. Let us hope they find it before present world lead- ers, Christian men who have saved their own souls (they think!), in their phobia of athiestic commun- ism, permit our énfire civilization to annihiliate itself in racial con- flict. The church could do a lot but it would be a painful experience for its members to forget about their own souls for awhile and apply the teachings of Jesus Christ; clude all men, of all colors, of all races, everywhere, If the younger generation is not influenced by the church to in- trease the churches’ influence, will it be wise enough to be able to devise a code of living, a stand- ard of ethics, a criterion of right and wrong, which will permit man- kind to survive? it is doubtful if it will, without some painful ex- pertences during which much af mankind may be wiped out. This is a subject about which a person could write for a long time but no doubt your ‘space 1§ Ornamental STRUTHERS WELDING Turn Left at Clark Road Just off Old Lakelse Lake Road Phone VI3-2491 to embrace their attitudes to in-j. ‘| valuable. In closing it might be sald that Heaven, in which Art Curfman is interested, would be a place where the inspiration of | the church would be such as to imbue in people the desire to put the cther fellow first, whatever his color or race. Thank you. Yours truly, George A. Rose Ee Editor Terrace “Omineca" Herald Since our posting here a year and a half ago, we have had many inquiries from local citizens, ask- ing if the Salvation Army of Ter- race hag a brass band. Many look forward to this expression of Com- munity Service, but at present we do not have a band, However, currently we have a Special project on to acquire brass instruments. The minimum funds needed to make this beginning are $500. If you, are interested in assisting in this project in a financial way, contact may be made through the Salvation Army, Box 208, Terrace. Thank you. Sincerely, Lieut. E, Tennant Letters to the K DITOR Editor Terrace Omineca Herald Well it looks as if Terrace is going to get that $100,000 garage anyway. If Councillors can do this all on their own why was there a vote on it? Why a vote on any- thing? . Another yiew — on this ditch. It is supposed to drain your lovely school grounds. It would break a snake's back to follow it and it is the most unsightly effort I've ever seen, On the map, the culverted places were marked in yellow. Well we have the unsightly thing running right by our door (all marked in yellow on the map) but after digging it they came to the | im door .and said, “Where would you like your culvert?” Before that we did have a drive- | way both in and out! This ditch is supposed to take all the excess water off the roads. Well we still have water across the road on our corner and fhe ditch ig dry. That's engineering that supasses any. Well, enough beefs — a pat on the back to the Reeve who has pro- mised a vast street oiling this nexi summer. I still live at the foot of Lanfear Hill Mr. Reeve and it sure gets dusty!
