New Marxist journal The first edition of a new publication has recently made its debut to join a growing family of new Canadian maga- zines. Some of the others have been Exchange, Canada Month, Canadian, etc. This one, however, is like no other, and offers what the others exclude. It is called The Marxist Quarterly. "Tt is a sign of the times.” says the introduction to The Marxist Quarterly, “that the positions of Marxism are being argued over, discussed debated much more widely than ever before in this country . .. And increasingly people are asking: that... the Communists themselves be heard in the presenta- tion of their own views. "This request, we Shall endeavor to meet.” The first issue includes articles on economics (The Trouble With Troubled Canada), History (The Early Years, Archives of the Labor Movement), art and literature (A Canadian Writer and the Modern World), articles from other lands (In- stitutional and Political Changes of the Cuban Socialist Revo- lution), reviews and others. The editors intend to invite guest articles from non-Marx- ist writers on various topics. The Marxist Quarterly is available at the People’s Co-op Bookstote. Annual subscription is $2.00, single copies, $50c. Joe Hill’s sister, Mrs. Ester Dahl, has expressed solidar- ity to Helen Sobell in her struggle to free her husband. The Communist Party said this step would help put an end to the stagnation of Can- ada’s economy, could help raise the purchasing power of the bulk of the people, and would allow the development of economic policies to end our country’s dependency on the U.S. and encourage the growth of Canadian manufac- turing industries. The brief was presented to the royal commission by Les- lie Morris, Nelson Clarke and Phyllis Clarke, on behalf of the Communist Party’s na- tional committee. Nationalization of the bank- ing and credit system, said the brief, “would make it possible to achieve a _ bal- anced economic development, based on genuine industrializ- ation of Canada — manufac- turing of finished goods from our natural resources, our energy and our power and the elimination of the condi- tion in which manufacturing occupies a less important part of the economy than 10 years ago.” It would also ‘‘reduce our dependence on the USA for a large part of our manufac- tures and for almost all our machinery and machine- tools.” The Communist Party pointed out that at present, under the control of private institutions.
