‘Unions (ICFTU), better known as the “Scab International” were compelled to recognize MRA for what it is. Not that a lot of them didn’t know, or were sur- prised at what they may have learned, ow, but labor fakers have also a “prestige”’ to maintain in their vocation of mislead- ing workers, so they put on a fine show of ‘indignation at the company unionism and interference of MRA in the affairs of their respective unions. It was there- fore. inevitable that the MRA subject should inject itself in the TLC conven- tion. Frank Hall, vice-president of the Bro- therhood of Railway Clerks and chair- ‘man of the negotiation (sell-out) com- mittee for seventeen non-operating rail- way unions, is a strong adherent of MRA. During recent railway wage nego- tiations, “Brother” Hall told TLC dele- gates that “an MRA colleague suggest- éd moral strength through prayer,” so Hall “prayed” — and the railway work- ers got a wage increase (less ‘than one quarter of what they were demand- ing and justifiably entitled to) plus the threat of Bill 93 and an Emergency Powers Act — just in case Hall’s “prey- ing” didn’t work out to the satisfaction of the Railway Association. ir tt te) it tt Tt }-~ recent Trades and Labor Congress Convention (AFL-TLC) appears to lave 8otten into quite a heated contro- “sy in one of its sessions on the sub- ect of Moral Rearmament. But—“boys, if it is as bad as all that, then by all means let us have no more to do with it.” Berg is one of those perpetual joiners- uppers: Carl will join anything if it looks like a ready aid to Carl’s meal ticket. We knew him back in the ’teen years when he joined the IWW to help keep him in coffee and doughnuts. We knew him when later he joined the OBU or much the same reason, and we knew him when the AFL gathered him up and gave him a meal ticket for taking credit for the trade union organizational work done by the Communists and the Young Communist League. com, € the also late “god-damn-you- ae €to-Jesus” Billy Sunday evangel a €n, Buchman has sanctified police at anti-Sovietism and bourgeois phil- MRA m in one great unholy trinity. Workers in the state industries were the first to be attacked and are foremost in resistance. The workers in privately-owned industry, how- ore realise that they will be the next to be attacked and are joining the strike; At the root of the attacks on the workers there is the fact that the French budget is running an enormous deficit, which the government is trying to close by attacks on the state employees. The principal cause of the deficit is the enormous burden of milit- arism, particularly the ever-mounting war expenditure on Indo-China. Accentuating this deficit is the large scale expert tax evasion by all groups of business people, large and small. In every country the capitalist class seeks to evade taxes and, of course, meets with a measure of success. The success of the tax evader in France far exceeds that of his contemporaries in other capitalist lands. The wage and salary earners are, however, enmeshed in a system of taxation at source and pay to the full. The budget deficit means inflation and prices rising faster than wages. ; weg The French government, led by the millionaire Laniel, does nothing: to stop the war in Indo-China; nothing to stop the monstrous tax evasion, and: calmly proceeds to operate a series of sweeping economies at the expense of the workers. . Food subsidies have been abolished in France, and there is in process a step-by-step raising of rents with a view to the ultimate aboli- tion of rent control. In face of this sweeping attack, the workers are ‘calling for a withdrawal of the governmerit’s economy measures and for all-round increases in wages. ; ot They are also calling for the recall of the National Assembly in order that a new solution of the crisis can be found. In the past great and justifiable strikes of the French working ; class have been meanly slandered by sections of the trade union bureau: cracy in Britain and Canada. ‘ Endeavors to push wages up to the level of the increased cost of living have been depicted as Red plots to wreck France, This has only emboldened the French employers and their gov. ernment. erro a Now, however, all sections of the French working class are in the _ : struggle. : _ The Red hogy can no longer be used to create divisions between the workers of France and the workers of other capitalist countries. . Therefore, the workers of all lands have every interest in help- ing the French workers to defend their living conditions’ and to bring the reactionary Laniel government to its knees. | The defeat of reaction, in France will be a great victory for : peace and social advance, and the workers ofall countries must help their French brothers to achieve this aim. a ; PACIFIC TRIBUNE — AUGUST 21, 1953 — PAGE 5
