But he told board members they would probably have to find a new chairman next year. “No group should have the same chairman for too long,’’ - Pousctte said in his accep- tance speech. He went on to outline. a number of changes he would like ta see the board undergo this year. Pousette said he would like to see the board involve parents more. He also wants the board to take a more active approach in dealing with the education ministry. “T would like to see more board governance,”’ Pouselte said. ‘‘The ministry is refer- ring less and less to the board - they are making policies without board approval more and more.”? The position chairman will be among the trustees. Trustce Stew Christensen was also re-clected by ac- clamation as the district’s rep- resentative to the B.C. School Trustces Association, kKahkka THE SCHOOL DISTRICT will be applying for money from the provincial Skills Now program, The district is officially eligible for $182,392 accord- ing to Skills Now, but they have requested $201,250. ‘“We are applying for addi- tional money because of ex- ceptional circumstances in our district such as greater dis- tances between centres,”’ said Harold Cox, the district direc- tor of instruction who worked on the application. Students entering grade 11 in September 1995 are now required to complete 30 hours of work experience before graduating. Cox said the money will be used to help students prepare for and complcte this new re- quirement. “Some of it will be spent on developing partnerships with post-secondary _— institutions and businesses,’” said Cox. He said the money will also be spent on introducing the Internet and other clectronic communications into the schaols. kkk kok YOUTH AT RISK will be offered the hepatitis B vaccine from the Skeena Health Unit. Public health nurses will be consuiling school staff before contact with students thought to be at risk of contracting hepatitis. This is part of a province-wide program by the Chief Forester-to: . examine the timber supply situation in the province. The review will provide the Chief Forester with information to determing harvesting levels that are environmentally sound and that: - ensure the sustainability of 8.C.’s forests. The discussion paper summarizes the two technical reports. — timber supply analysis and socio-economic assessment —. . and identifies the critical areas of public concern in an understandable manner. Public input on the discussion paper is welcome and will be considered by the Chief Forester before the allowable annual cut is determined for the TSA. Forest Service staff will be meeting with First Nations, interested groups and individuals upon request to provide an opportunity for the publicto ask questions and examine background information related to the timber supply review.
