Nel leads cancer battle I'd like to share a little bit about a relired nurse who has found her place in the community by volunteering to help others in need. I’m talking about the president ‘of the Terrace branch of the Ca- nadian Cancer Society — Nel Lieuwen. _ Born in Andyk, Holland on June 4th, 1924, Nel had six brothers and two sisters, Her father Francis was a bulb grower,.markcting his tulip,. daf- fodil and gladioli bulbs at flowe markets in Haarlem, Holland. Nel-grew-up in Andyk and be- came trained as a seamstress. ‘In 1945 she went to Amster- dam, taking an office job helping prepare and book concerts for blind people. In 1950 she immigrated to Can- ada with her entire family. “Her brothers and sisters and _theit parents lived first in Hous- ton, B.C... . The family landed on a farm that belonged to her uncle. They sold milk to Smithers and fresh farm eggs to local stores. - Nel went to work as a housekeeper and later moved to oo Vancouver, where she worked at ~ Vancouver Gencral Hospital as a ‘dishwasher, There she was encouraged by “friends to go. into nursing. Her friend Bets Kwantes, a nurse, of- fered to pay ber tuition. -. Her cousin helped her with English and she went to Shurpass - College, getting her Grade 12. > She then trained as a nurse at _:Royal- Columbian Hospital for ~ three years. - _» -Nel was 31 then; all the other nursing students were under 20, . Nel graduated in. September, 5 1960 as a graduate nurse, She accepted her first nursing job at: Royal Columbian Hospital, “working in the surgical ward - there for two years. At Easter in 1962 she visited “Terrace to see her sisler and was casked by the hospital to come and - work here. 2 She ‘starled at Mills Memorial two months later. Since then she has tried to find her niche in the community, Her friend Norma Morrison suggested she join the Hospice Society, Nel fit in very well there She’s now an emergency aid volunteer for the Canadian Can- cer Socicty. It’s rewarding work for her — gelting in touch with people who have cancer and then helping them in their needs. She helps them with finding transportation to Vancouver, ac- comodation, getting drugs, oxygen, prostheses, wigs — any- thing they need. .
