For loca! riding enthusiasts, Terrace’s J&J Stables offers the only service of its kind in the area. Proprietors Jerry and Jane Tumer also invite novices for lessons and groups for overnight trail trips through the region's spectacular scenery. J&J Stables — a horse for every personality _ Jerry Turner has been in the horse business for 24 years. He has raced harness horses all across Canada and the United States, trained harness and show horses, operated a blacksmith shop, and performed horse den- tistry (yes, even horses must see their dentist regularly!). Sheer coincidence brought Jerry and his wife Jane to Ter- race. They stopped here while on -vacation'a few years ago. Both were so impressed.with the area they decided to move here, even- tually opening what is now Ter- race’s only riding stable. J & J Stables is in its third summer, They cater to all kinds of people of all ages, from tots right on up to grandparents. Or as Jerry Turner himself puts it, “From five to 105.’’ Business gets a little better each year, allowing the Turners to expand and offer a few more services to the community. They buy and sell horses an tack. And willingly stand behind ‘their reputation, ‘““When a customer makes a purchase at J & J Stables, part of what he or she is buying is our reputation,”’ Turner says. ‘‘For example, if a customer buys a horse from us but then has problems with the - animal, we'll try to retrain the: horse; or maybe the owner simp- _. ly needs to be taught proper ‘ handling or riding procedures. If all that fails, we'll find the customer another horse. We aim to please.” : - Turner still does some shoeing and dental work for the public, but explains he’s trying to nar-. row that end of the business down -to preferred clientele simply because he’s tired of wrestling’ half-wild horses that” ¢ a Et ong aces coe spend most of their time in the pasture away from human con- tact. | - ; The Turners coach com- petitors for various horse shows around the northwest. A large part of their coaching is teaching _ horse and | rider to work as a team. - , Trail rides and overnight camp rides are another service of J & J Stables. All rides are con- ducted on groomed trails, mean- - ing trails that have been cleared of all debris such as logs and brush. One of the longer trails is the access to the Seven Sisters Range which takes riders up into the lush alpine meadows. Overnight camp rides are first-class all the way. All riders ° need to bring is themselves and a change of clothing, everything else is ‘supplied. The grub is top fare. Turner says you won't find pork and beans on any of their overnight rides. Camp rides can be booked for more than one night. ; Something new through. July: and August ‘is, a three-day day sions, western; basic horse care;. basic rider and handler safety; wind up trail ride; and a J & J T-shirt. Early reservations are recommended. J & J Stables has a horse for every personality. It makes no ‘difference whether the client is an expert horseman/horsewom- an or: have ‘never been on a horse. 7 °°: ' . Turner says they aie often ap- proached by.people who have © never ridden before or who have had. a -bad ‘experience -with’ a’ ” a te ne nee A crm ee mel eee an eu metenemey op enti Hoe See ee ae avid horse at one time. They are understandably nervous. But Turner explains that they make a point of talking to each in- / dividual and closely watching their body language. This enables them to: guage each per- ‘son’s personality and then match them with the right horse. ‘Horses have : different per- sonalities just like-people. Each animal is an individual.” They. are especially fussy ‘about safe rides for children. ‘‘If a child has'a bad experience the first few times they’re on a horse, that memory is going to stay with the poor kid forever. . And that negates the whole: | point of teaching children about horses.”’ They also provide helmets for children. One problem the Turners en- counter time and again is parents who come out to the stables with a small child, in- tending to ride while holding the child in their arms. This is art ab- solute NO at J & J Stables, and the Turners are rea! sticklers for this rule. They explain that . holding a child while riding is ‘just not safe. No matter how ‘competent you are, it’s very easy to drop a child while trying to control a horse that suddenly spooks. _ “But we do offer a sort of babysitting service for parents who bring small children,’”’ Jane Turner says. ‘‘We have two very gentle ponies that one of the staff will lead the children around on while the parents go riding. It’s a compromise that makes everybody happy.’’ The horses at J & J Stables are the cream of the crop.
