W. R. Ross,. minister of lands for . British Columbia, has been issuing. The special pamphlet referred to is the one entitled, ‘‘Sur- veyed Lands for the Settler—Room for Thousands Along the Railway—Free. Surveyed: Lands.’’ From one end of the province: to.the other the . minister of lands is being held up to ridicule and as a horrible example of the’ wildcat land pro- moter. Ata recent meeting in Victoria, Dunean Ross challenged the honorable minister to find one single quarter section of land within twenty miles of the Grand Trunk Pacifie railway that is: open. for pre-emption and owned by the crown.: The honorable minister knows, and so do his var- ious assistants. know, that he cannot make: good. . The crown, owns nothing along the railways in. British Columbia: that a farmer ‘would: accept,- even though it was free, surveyed, fenced,.and - cleared. Yet the Honorable W. R. Ross issues a: pamphlet and: circulates ‘it throughout the world. stating that there are millions of acres of survey- ed land open and free for the pre-emptor. . There have’ been. men in other provinces and in other’ countries. who have been put in the “‘pen’’ ‘for. less criminal misrépresentation.. ‘Wildcat: ‘promot- ers are being hunted in other parts of the domin- ion like common murderers. The legal machinery in British Columbia is tied because the attorney- general is as bad as the. minister of lands, and. they are like partners in crime. Honorable ‘Mr. Ross stepped’ on his ‘own foot when he thought he could get away with that rotten : literature, . The people in the province are getting too well ac- quainted: with the actual conditions’ to. swallow the bait, hook and line, and there are e thousands * ow ho. > would “ike to see the attorney-general ‘and the minister of lands: come: before a jury charged with their respective crimes; ‘and see ‘which one would get the dongest term ine ‘the pen oe esmaner of. trying ‘to gull the voters: of: British 1. Columbia, and also the-land. seekers from 5 “other parts,. with ‘his wildcat: literature that-ia a misrepresentation from start to finish, why did good land and make a settlement with them? He ‘knows that the holders cannot pay. their debts ‘to the government. Then why did he not say, ‘‘Take crown grants for land to the amount of what you have paid, or get busy and clear the land and put settlers on it at. reasonable terms and the govern- ment: will back you up?” That does not -seem to ‘be ‘the proper: thing for the present minister of lands.’ He wants the speculators | to make a for- tune at the expense of the common tax payer, A policy of. land settlement would ‘algo be embar- rassing to the government. -because the _govern- ‘the political leanings of the new people in time to a lot of Liberals 6 or ‘Independents would. ‘get: land and have a right to vote... keep new people out of | the provinee. : TEE ‘poor: “Asiatié—no “more . pool!
