TBURSDAY, October 24, 1929, began as a cool and cloudy day — but when at
10 a.m. the gong rang in the New York Stock Exchange, and the tape began
its stuttering motién in tickers across the land. a storm broke. :

Large sales of blocks of stock took place in the first few minutes. By 11 am.
a flood of orders to “sell at the market” was pouring in. The ticker fell four hours
behind sales; when the day ended it had listed a record 13 million: shares sold, and

a net loss of $11 billion.
