Korea and China, government spokes- Men and their hacks on the daily. press howled to high heaven. “It is a lie,” they bayed in full voice, ‘uttered by a Krem- lin dupe!” Then the smear platoon of modern journalism went into action, pour- ‘ing out a veritable torrent of slander, in- Vective, innuendo and threats against the character’ and person of Endicott. “Away with him .. crucify him,” scream- ed the Philistines, as they scribbled their poison editorials to hide a hideous crime. When the Very Reverend Dr. Hewlitt Johnson, Dean of Canterbury, declared that horrible bacteriological warfare was being perpetrated upon the people of Korea and China, British “statesmen” and their dollar-subsidized lie factories howl- ed to high heaven, “It is a lie. . . uttered by an irresponsible old man who has been duped by Moscow.” “An old goat,” the Philistines howled, and “they spat upon him and reviled him,” and shouted “Away with him.” wine Thus the smear barrage of the politi- cians and their kept press, turned on in full force, was designed first to destroy two noted churchmen working for peace, and secondly and most important for the warmongers, to hide a monstrous crime Against the people of Korea and China. — Since they possess the ability to com- pound a felony against truth, we may presume that the “gentlemen of the press” Can read? It is remarkable however, to say the least, that although the monopoly press has dedicated all the vials of its well- feigned wrath against Dr.. Endicott and the Dean of Canterbury, it has maintain- ed a deathly silence on the public findings embodied in the extensive report of the International Scientific Commission For ‘The Investigation Of The Facts Concern- ing Bacteriological Warfare In Korea and ~ China. \ This commission, of course, wasn’t handpicked by warmongers. It was a - commission consisting of six world-re- Nowned scientists from Sweden, France, Britain, Italy, Brazil and the Soviet Union, scientists and scholars: from the leading universities and laboratories of their respective countries. The voluminous report of this scien- tifie commission, based upon months of intense investigation and studying every’ €vailable piece of evidence on the inci- _ dence of germ warfare, not only confirms , all that Dr. James G. Endicott and the Dean of Canterbury thad to say on’ the Subject, but goes into such minute detail ‘On this international crime .as to leave No loophole’ of doubt for any agile doubt- er to crawl through. Late : “The commission has come to the fol. . lowing conclusions. The peoples of ~ Korea and China have indeed been the | tbjective .of bacteriological weapons. "+... These have. been employed by units. of the U.S. armed forces, usinga great. Variety of different methods for the Purpose, some of which seem to be de~ velopments of those applied by the Jap- anese Army during the Second World lar. The commission reached these Conclusions, passing from one logical Tom McEwen, Editor as One Year $3.00. One Year $4.00 . Printed by Union step to another. It did so reluctantly * because its members had not been dis- posed to believe that such an inhuman technique could have been put into exe- cution in the face of its universal con- demnation by the peoples of the na- tions.” Our “free press,’ doing a job for its paymasters, discreetly sidestepped the findings of the above Commission. A much easier job to slander and vilify. two prominent churchmen working for peace! Here is one of the choice specimens -from the sinkhole of sewer journalism. The British Columbia Economic Times, a bi-monthly magazine published iby the B.C. T'inancial Times, has an editorial in its August 9 edition entitled “Witchcraft.” the gist of this mental aberation is that Dr. James, G. Endicott and the Dean of Canterbury are the victims of “hypnot- ism,” otherwise how could they fly “di-. rectly in the face of logic and humanity to aecuse the western world of using ‘germ warfare in Korea.” According toe the British Columbia Eco- nomic Times, the Communists are now re- placing the science of Marxism with “hyp- notism”! Proof? “A tip was phoned from a contact in the Communist party to go to the nearest Communist bookstore and find out why that bookstore, along with other Communist ,book stores in. Canada had nearly every available issue of every book on hynotism published or issued in Canada.” ' t Real J. Edgar Hoover stuff; first a “tip off” by a mythical party contact, then bookstores just busting at tha seams with all the latest on hynotism! The edi- tor then makes the remarkable discovery that both (Endicott and the Dean “are of the abstract thinking type who are easy to hypnotise”; thus no effort is re- quired to see that “they are no longer normal human ,beings ‘but bodies possess- ed and used in the cold war between the godless materialism of Moscow and the God (sic) believing peoples of the world.” It is just possible this Philistine scrib- bler would like to see the Inquisition re- enacted, with the stake and faggots re- placing the pigeons in Victory Square, and the smell off roasting human flesh in- stead of the exotic odors of modern so- ciety. (He winds up with the hope that the government of Canada will look into the matter {and make a “very thorough study of hynotism and how and why it is being used in Canada by some political groups”! a : The editor of this British Columbia Economic Times is a lad named Walter R. Dent. His assistant editor is a wo- man, Lucy Davis, and his “departmental _ editor” a chap named Blaire McKenzie. Undoubtedly a few, if not all of them, have university degrees, as befits Finan- cial Times’ “standards.” ‘Since we be- lieve such people can read, we would re- commend the report of the International Scientific Commission On Bacteriological Warfare In Korea and China to their &t- tention. There is just a bare chance that they might learn who has been hypnotized. - and by whom. It might also not be amiss to remind these hired scribblers of pro- - woeative slander, falsehood and fantasy, that it was Mackenzie King and not ‘Tim Buck who consulted with Spookdom through the mediumjof,a ouiji board when issues affecting Canada’s destiny had to be decided. “The commission reached these con-- clusions . . . reluctantly, because its members had not been disposed to be- lieve that such inhumon technique ~ could have been put into execution. . . .” That is men and women Of science speaking, reluctanly,. but decisively. But the witch doctors of the British Columbia Economic Times continue to practice their yoodoo—and call for sacrificial victims to roast in their witchcraft. It may be the last session before the - federal election. What will it accomplish? This will depend upon the actions and demands of the people. More specifically it will depend upon how the people, in the federal constituencies, imipréss on theit MPs the need for action at Ottawa upon the burning issues of Canadian national policy. Here are four: ; : , Peace. Every MP should’ be confronted with the demand for immediate cease- fire in Korea. The majority of Canadians think our government and parliament should take a stand for peace in Korea which can be quickly reached on the basis of a cease-fire agreement and exchange of prisoners as provided by international law. If Canada’s parliament spoke up for Korea peace, U.S. obstruction in the UN - would be quickly overcome and our boys could be brought home by Christmas. & ~ copy of him. the working people he received only the hatréd his Q@, The crisis of Canada’s foreign, trade. Bill H-8, which would make advocacy of peace, or criticism of government policy a'treasonous or seditious offense, punishable by death or long imprison- ment; which would undermine the rights of the working class to organize and to strike; which would unroll the fascist-like pattern of McCarthyism in Canada. . 4., National Health Insurance. In every constituency the MP should be told that people's health and welfare, not U.S. dictated aggressive warfare, should be the concern of Canada’s parliament! ®, The Canadian tradition is that the MPs should be the servants of the elector ate. That parliament should be the sovereign guardian of the will and welfare of the nation. That the government of the day derives its power from the people and parliament. This tradition was born in struggle. It must be defended and strength ened in the struggle for Canada’s national interests. The people, in every federal constituency, should make their demands for~ peace, new national trade policies, democracy and health insurance known to every MP before November 20. eS Shades of ‘Iron Heel’ Bennett — ILONEL George Drew’s tour across the country is noteworthy for one thing — _the sheer cynicism with which the Tory leader hands out promises. There isn’t anything the ordinary citizen can think about for which “Gorgeous George” lacks a glib answer and a ready promise. ..., We recall another Tory blusterer back in the early thirties who was equally ready with his promises. One of them was: “Elect me, and I’ll cure unemployment in thirty days.” (The people did elect him — and slave labor camps at 25 cents a day _wasted the youth of a generation. That Tory leader was the late unlamented Richard Bedford Bennett. For his services to the ruling class he received a peerage. From : tr ; policies earned and the title that expressed that hatred — “Iron Heel” Bennett. ‘Drew might be almost a carbon __ Knowing the extent of popular opposition to the war policies of the St. Laurent government, Drew and his Tories hope that, in their anxiety for a change, the people will swap a Tory Tweedledee for a Liberal Tweedledum. Drew also hopes that the ‘people will fail to note or tend to forget that the Liberal government’s war policies have the support of the Conservatives at Ottawa, as they also have the support of the ~ Social Credit and CCF top leaders, and that any change from Liberalism to Toryism , will be no change at all — except for the worse. Needless to say, Drew is selecting fancy titles for his oratorical products, “Gateway to Freedom,” “Our Free World” and similar labels designed for political sales appeal. But the products inevitably turn out to be the same canned red herring. _ The people must regard the tours of such politicians as a warning to be up and doing in preparation for a federal election that will see scores of genuine people’s candidates in the field, candidates who will expose the war machinations of both Liberals and Tories, who will strive to bring the people together around the concept ‘of a people’s coalition fighting for those things which spell out peace, prosperity, and the advancement of Canada by and for Canadians. _ The Drews 4nd St. Lauernts represent the twin evils of Canadian imperial- ism. It is they who have subordinated the peace and wellbeing of Canada to the ‘war plans of Yankee imperialism. Their windy oratory is nothing more than a cover up for this crime, and a desperate attempt to continue it. On: June 12 last the people of B.C. gave both outfits a fitting reply to their bankrupt policies and war conspiracies. Let us get ready, while the Tory and Liberal demagogy is in full spate, to give them a similar and salutory lesson on a national scale. PACIFIC TRIBUNE — NOVEMBER 14, 1952 — PAGE 5 ‘
