That Council permanently ban the City of Port Coquitlam's | : a participation in the yearly Christmas Tree Burning Program. pee 2. That the City of Port Coquitlam sponsor an annual Christmas Tree Chipping Program in January of each year. Background & Comments: 7 The Environmental Protection Committee considered this matter in their Bo meetings of November 1, 29, amd December 13, 1990. The Committee received a be delegation from Mr. Jack Norie, a lecal Port Coquitlam resident, as well as 7 Steve Hart of the Port Coquitlam Fire Department. The Committee heard that ce for the past few years the City of Port Coquitlam Fire Department has been : pole sponsoring a Christmas Tree Burn in January for the residents of the : — community. Fire Department members volunteered their time and solicited pag TR donations from various community groups for entertainment and food. The Lan fo Committee was told that even at this late date the volunteers of the Fire ras Department are still prepared to put together a scaled down version of the Christmas Tree Burn for January 6, 1991, if approved. The Committee received Mr. Jack Norie as a delegation to two of the meetings. Mr. Norie felt the City cf Port Coquitlam should be setting an example to : : others to discourage open burning in the lower mainland. Mr. Norle presented ee ee information regarding other communities and alternative methods of disposing ae of Christmas Trees. One idea, which now appears very popular, is to chip the Pee! ‘trees into small wood chips, using mechanical wood chippers and then use the chips on compost piles or in parks and gardens.
