Municipalities Dear Mayor and Aldermen: Re: Royal Canadian Mounted Police Dress Code Nelson City Council has instructed this office to circulate the following resolu- tion, adopted by it on December 11, 1989, to all B.C. Municipalities. That whereas Canada is a nation of many ethnic, religious and cultural com- munities whose future well-being is inextricably bound to the spirit of under- standing and tolerance these many communities demonstrate toward each other; And whereas it is widely accepted that our national institutions, including our national police force, have an obligation to reflect the multicultural makeup of Canadian society; And whereas the RCMP have acknowledged the necessity of encouraging members o£ visible minority communities to join the force; Now therefore the Council resolves to endorse the actions of the Camnissioner o£ the RCMP in requesting that the dress code of the force be amended so as to acconmodate the religious obligations of the Sikh cammunity in Canada; And further this Council resolves to forward this resolution to the Solicitor General and the Prime Minister of Canada; And further that this Council circulate this resolution to other municipali-- ties in British Columbia Yours truly, L blew Mrs. C.L.
