C6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 30, 1996 BDC helps companies to take on the world The astonishing growth of Canadian exports in recent years has proven that Canadian businesses can compete with the best in the world and reap the rewards of expanding international trade opportunities. But getting established in exporting can be a daunting challenge for small businesses and that’s where the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) can help with several innovative programs. “A company cin grow domestically with- in the perimetres of the Canadian market, but those who'access other markets around the world can achieve tremendous growth,” said Dave Mowat, the BDC’s Senior’ Vice- President for Emerging Markets. © Here are the products the BDC offers to help companies achieve their exporting goals: . NEXPRO NEXPROQ is a program designed to assist owners. and managers of small businesses whose companies have export potential but lack the necessary expertise to proceed: NEXPRO helps participants broaden their knowledge of . exporting fundamentals, develop a realistic export. plan and imple- ment their own export strategy. The program brings together representa- tives of 20 to 25 businesses who participate as a group in 40 hours of workshop instruc- tion and 25 hours of roundtable discussion over the course of about ’a year. Instructors with solid exporting experience lead these ~ sessions where all aspects of doing business abroad are explored. In addition, NEXPRO provides participat- ing businesses with a total of 40 hours’ of individual counselling. This counselling includes monthly visits to businesses by the export advisor and individual counselling after completion of the program to ensure the smooth implementation of their export strategy. “We have had excellent success with NEXPRO,” said Jean-FranAois Croft, the BDC's Senior Manager of Management Services. “We' ve found that approximately 70 per cent of the businesses were exporting at the end of the program and another 25 per cent were making preparations.” Croft added a 1994 survey found 97 per cent of participating businesses would rec- ommend the program to others... woe Going Global Going Global began as a 22-minute video produced with the co-operation of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce that aims to inform business people about the export- ing process and point them toward resources to assist them. In the coming months, the BDC will build on the Going Global concept by offering small businesses in at least 50 communities across Canada: the opportunity to attend exporting information sessions. | “An awtul lot of people say: I can’t export because 1 don't know what to do or anything about the market,” said Jean Lemoine, the . BDC's Director of Management Services Programs. “So we try within the hour and half ‘information session to tell people: _ There's a method to exporting; we have the methods, and we can help.” The sessions, organized in cooperation with the Canadian and local chambers of commerce, will rely on the Going Global vid- eo. and experts with hands-on exporting experience to “demystify”. the process of doing business abroad, Lemoine said. ‘Participants ‘will also receive information on exporting resources offered by the BDC in programs like NEXPRO as well as assistance available from other agencies and institutions, -dimber, treadmill and Lifecycle.
