20 © Terrace Review — Wednesday, June 4, 1986 Master Ringers to perform in concert at local church TERRACE ~— Uplands Baptist Church will host a Handbell Concert by the Master Ringers of College Park Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. The concert will begin at 8 p.m., June 10 at Uplands Baptist Church, Terrace. The Master Ringers are on a 15-day tour throughout the province of British Columbia. While in Canada, they will be ringing over 200 concerts in churches, shopping centers and other outdoor concerts. The group will culminate their tour in Vancouver where they have been in- vited to ring for the 1986 World Expo. smallest bells weighing a few ounces and the largest weighing almost 12 pounds. The program will include a wide varie- ty of ringing styles and techniques including hymn arrangements, classical pieces, and original handbell com- positions. The Master Ringers have in the past, been in- vited to ring throughout Europe — Spain and France; Central America, Honduras; Mexico and the United States. The Handbell Choir is directed by Leroy Krolczyk, the Minister of Music at Col- lege Park Baptist Church. He holds a Bachelor of Music The Master Ringers are comprised of 11 high school students who are chosen through audition. They are one of four handbell choirs from the church. The handbells themselves number 61 bells comprising five oc- taves of sound, the Education from North and a Master of Church Music from South- western Baptist Theo- logical Seminary. (Doubleday: $23.95) is, as it promises, a simple basic guide to quilting, including patchwork and applique. by Andrea Deakin Terrace Reviewer There are instructions given for 30 simple projects incorporating basic techniques, many of them taking only about two hours to complete. The projects which are practical, yet attractive, in- clude simple objects like a tea cozy, placemats, a tote bag, lingerie, pillows, a very attractive patchwork flannel baby jacket, quilts and Christmas items. The instructions and diagrams are clearly presented and most patterns are given full size. This is a practical working guide with projects that are worth the time. Smocking is a versatile craft which has its origin in folk embroidery. It was an attractive and practical way of controlling fabric in garments where sizing would vary — many pieces were handed down from father to son or mother to daughter in a time when clothing was expensive. Various areas of the world have developed their own unique patterns to distinguish their folkwear. Batsford is a publisher renowned and respected for the quality of their craft publications. ‘‘Smocking: Traditional and Modern Approaches"? (Oenone Cave & Jean Hodges: Batsford: $19.95) is the work of two specialists in the field. Cave traces the evolution of. smocking and its role in folk costume, and explains the basic techniques — estimating fabric, preparing the gathers and traditional stitches. There are 40 designs of items suitable for children or for bazaar work, many of them incor- porating applique, all made from very small amounts of materials. The ideal way of using up all the bits that are too small for garments but which ‘must make something, so I’ll keep it’! There are full size patterns and straightforward directions for items like stuffed toys, shoulder bags, place mats, pillows, fabric pictures and ornaments. . Lastly there is a new book from Ondori, the Japanese company which issues some very attractive embroidery and crochet books. In this case the book is devoted to dolls. Many of the dolls are decorative, or mascots. The heads are softly sculpured, using materials like cot- ton batting, rayon or cotton knit and the instructions for forming them are given in detail and illustrated step-by-step with clear photographs. The finished dolls are most attractive, ranging from tall slim decorater dolls in lace, tiny chubby lit- tle mascots, lacy pyjama bags and soft clowns to child-like dolls hanging from gay umbrellas to decorate a child’s room.
